About Donnie Simpson
Simpson is well-known for his piercing green eyes, pleasant grin, and smooth baritone voice. He was born into a family that ran a record store. Simpson started his career in radio when he was 15 years old at WJLB in Detroit, Michigan. He stayed there for eight years and was exposed to a variety of musical styles throughout that time. In 1977, he uprooted his life and moved to Washington, D.C., where he got a job as a DJ and program director at WRC-FM, which is now known as WKYS.
During the 1980s, when the station changed its format from playing disco-based rhythmic contemporary hits to urban contemporary, he continued to work at WKYS and was there for the entire transition. Simpson got his start in the television industry in 1981 when he was hired by WRC-TV as a back-up anchor for the George Michael Sports Machine show, which was broadcast on NBC’s Washington affiliate. Soon after that, he became the host of the music video show “Video Soul” on BET, in addition to numerous other network specials. In the end, Simpson became the presenter of The Donnie Simpson Morning Show, which aired on WPGC-FM for a total of 17 years. He left radio in 2010.
