About Katharine Ross
On January 29, 1940, Ross was born in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. At the time of her birth, her father, Dudley Tying Ross (1906–1991), was serving in the United States Navy. He was born and raised in New York, and he had previously had a position at the Associated Press. Katherine Mullen, Ross’s mother (1909–1993), was a native of Oklahoma and had previously made her home in Indiana and Oregon prior to relocating to San Francisco. She passed away in 1993. In 1937, she tied the knot there with Ross’s grandfather. After some time, the family made their home in Walnut Creek.
In 1960, she tied the knot with Joel Fabiani, the man who had been her undergraduate sweetheart, but the union lasted for only two years before it was dissolved in divorce. 1964 was the year that she wed her second husband, John Marion, however the couple separated the following year in 1967.
She was given a contract by agent Wally Hiller, and in 1964, Ross appeared in episodes of Kraft Suspense Theatre, The Lieutenant, Arrest and Trial, The Virginian, The Great Adventure, Ben Casey, Mr. Novak, Wagon Train, Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre, Run for Your Life, Gunsmoke, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (“Dividing Wall”, 1963), in addition to playing the love interest of Heath Barkley opposite Lee Majors on The Big Valley (Season 1, Episode 7-“Winner Loses All”). She went through the screening process for “The Young Lovers.”
After her marriage to the director of photography Conrad Hall, Ross took a break from the Hollywood scene for a while. She did some acting on occasion, including roles in the films Get to Know Your Rabbit (1972), They Only Kill Their Masters (1972), and Chance and Violence (1974), in which she co-starred alongside Yves Montand. She turned down a number of additional roles, including one in the movie The Towering Inferno.
In 1969, following the completion of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” Ross wed Conrad Hall, the film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer. Hall had already won the award three times. In 1973, they got a divorce.
After the production of The Stepford Wives in 1974, she wed Gaetano “Tom” Lisi; the couple had first met on the set of the film, where he was working as a chauffeur and technician. In 1979, they got a divorce.
Beginning in 1979, Ross starred in a number of television movies, such as Murder by Natural Causes, which she co-starred in alongside Hal Holbrook, Barry Bostwick, and Richard Anderson; Rodeo Girl, which she starred in 1980; Murder in Texas, which she starred in 1981; and Marian Rose White (1982).
She appeared in supporting roles in the films The Final Countdown (1980) and Wrong Is Right (1982), but she primarily worked in television films, including: The Shadow Riders (1982), a remake of Wait Until Dark (1983), Travis McGee (1982) with Elliott, Secrets of a Mother and Daughter (1983), Red Headed Stranger (1986), and Houston: The Legend of Texas (1986) with Elliott.
In 1984, Ross tied the knot with Sam Elliott. They appeared in the supernatural horror thriller The Legacy together as co-stars. They had worked together on the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and after becoming reacquainted on the set of The Legacy, they started dating one other. They got married in May 1984, which was four months before the birth of their daughter Cleo Rose Elliott.
Ross co-wrote the teleplay for the 1991 film Conagher and starred in the film alongside her husband, Sam Elliott. She also appeared in the 1991 films A Climate for Killing and Home Before Dark (1997).
Donnie Darko, a film that became a cult classic in 2001, featured her as Donnie’s therapist. She appeared in the films Do not Let Go (2002) and Capital City (2004), and in the indie film Eye of the Dolphin (2006), she portrayed the role of Carly Schroeder’s grandmother.
