Music First

Randy Jackson was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He began showing his talents early, having learned to play the bass guitar at age 13. After studying music in Southern University, Jackson caught his first big break in 1986 when he joined the rock band Journey as a session bassist. While continuing to work as a musician for various artists, Jackson cultivated the skills to become a proficient producer. In the years that followed, he ensured his fame by collaborating with big names such as Carlos Santana, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Mariah Carey and many more.

Jackson’s tremendous musical expertise earned him much prestige in the San Francisco Bay Area. By the mid-1990’s, he was one of the most sought-after producers in the business. After many years of helping divas and rock stars record, perform and produce records, Jackson landed a prestigious job at the top of the music industry as an executive for Columbia records and, later, MCA records.

Judging Idols And Beyond

Jackson is best known for his role on the explosively successful hit reality TV series, American Idol. As one of three judges from the show’s 2002 beginnings, he has sculpted himself into one of the most widely recognized television personalities. With signature remarks (“dawg”) and helpful criticisms, Jackson won the hearts of millions of viewers nationwide. Since the resignation of Paula Abdul in 2009 and Simon Cowell in 2010, Jackson continues on as the only remaining original judge.

Off-screen, Jackson maintains a heavy workload. While still producing and recording artists, he also hosts a syndicated radio show called Randy Jackson’s Hit List. In 2008, he helped produce and launch America’s Best Dance Crew, a competitive group dance reality TV series, which gained immediate popularity. Both American Idol and ABDC have received enormous international attention.

Less Randy

In 1999, Jackson was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Shifting his focus towards his health, he took on a complete lifestyle change and, in 2003, underwent gastric-bypass surgery. As a result, he effectively lost over 100 pounds and maintains his health through exercise and a balanced diet. Jackson even wrote a book, Body With Soul: Slash Sugar, Cut Cholesterol and Get a Jump on Your Best Health Ever “to share [his] story, what [he] went through, and to talk to people about how to prevent diabetes.” He is also an avid supporter of many charities as well as the founder of his own organization: Randy Jackson’s Childhood Obesity Foundation.
