About Taylor Hawkins
After spending the spring of 1996 on the road, Foo Fighters settled into a recording studio in Seattle with producer Gil Norton to begin work on their second studio album. According to reports, Dave Grohl and drummer William Goldsmith got into an argument while they were recording, which ultimately led to Goldsmith quitting the band. After reuniting in Los Angeles, the band essentially started the album’s recording process over again with Grohl playing drums.
On February 17, 1972, Oliver Taylor Hawkins made his debut into the world in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1976, his family relocated to Laguna Beach, California, and that is where Hawkins spent his formative years. Hawkins was the youngest of three children; his older siblings were a brother named Jason and a sister named Heather.
Throughout his career, Hawkins used drums from a number of different manufacturers, including Ludwig Drums, Tama Drums, and, most famously, Gretsch Drums, which he endorsed and played from 2005 until the time of his passing. In addition to that, it was well known that he played Zildjian Cymbals.
During the tour that supported Jagged Little Pill and Alanis Morissette’s Can not Not tour, Hawkins played the role of Alanis Morissette’s drummer from June 1995 to March 1997. In the music videos for the songs “You Oughta Know” “All I Really Want” and “You Learn” he made an appearance. Additionally, he was included on Morissette’s VHS and DVD live performance of Jagged Little Pill (1997).
On May 20th, 1997, the album titled “The Colour and the Shape” was made available for purchase. Grohl placed a call to Hawkins, a person with whom he was familiar at the time, in order to inquire about the recommendations he had for a new drummer to join the band.
In addition to playing drums with the Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins has contributed vocals, guitar, and piano to a variety of albums in addition to his work with the band. On a cover version of Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” he provided the lead vocal performance.
In 2005, Hawkins and Alison, who is now his wife, tied the knot. They are the parents of three children as a unit. After relocating from Topanga Canyon in the year 2012, they made their home in Hidden Hills, California. Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders was a side project for Hawkins that resulted in the release of an album of the same name in 2006.
After that, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders came out with two more studio albums: the first was titled Red Light Fever and was released in 2010, and the second was titled Get the Money and was released in 2019.
In 2013, when Foo Fighters were taking a hiatus from performing, Taylor Hawkins joined a rock cover band called Chevy Metal. Hawkins made the announcement in March 2014 that his new side project would be called The Birds of Satan. Along with Hawkins’s drum technician and bandmate from Chevy Metal, Wiley Hodgden, who sings and plays bass guitar, this release also features Mick Murphy, another member of Chevy Metal who plays guitar.
It was on the Foo Fighters’ album Concrete and Gold from 2017 that he sang the lead vocals for the song “Sunday Rain”. During live Foo Fighters performances, he was the main vocalist for a few of the band’s songs, including a cover of Queen’s “Somebody To Love” that was performed at his final appearance with the band. He was also a contributor to the band’s songwriting, and since There Is Nothing Left to Lose, he has been credited as a co-writer on every album the band has released.
The album The Lockdown Sessions was released by Elton John in October 2021. On the track “E-Ticket” which was included on the album, Hawkins played drums. On March 20, 2022, Hawkins gave his last performance with the Foo Fighters before passing away. The concert took place at the Lollapalooza festival in Argentina.
On April 3, 2022, Hawkins’s legacy was honored as the Foo Fighters were awarded three Grammys posthumously. The Beach Boys’ drummer Dennis Wilson had begun recording a song titled “Holy Man” but the recording was never completed. Hawkins was given the task of finishing the tune by writing and performing fresh lyrics for the song. This song was released as a single for Record Store Day in 2019, and it also contained contributions from Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen.
Hawkins, along with the other members of Foo Fighters, appeared in the horror comedy film Studio 666, which was released on February 25, 2022. Posthumously, he is featured on a few tracks of Ozzy Osbourne‘s album Patient Number 9, which was released in 2022.
