Her first appearances in movies were in supporting roles for the films It is My Turn (in which she was credited onscreen as Diane Wiest) and I am Dancing as Fast as I Can, both of which starred Jill Clayburgh in the lead roles. She had a starring role in the 1984 film Footloose, as the wife of the minister and Ariel’s mother.
Wiest was born in the city of Kansas City in the state of Missouri. Her mother’s maiden name was Keddie, and she worked as a nurse. Her mother was from Auchtermuchty, which is located in Scotland, while her father came from the United States and was of Croatian and German origin. They met in Algiers.
Her first performance on Broadway was in 1971, when she replaced another actress in Robert Anderson’s Solitaire/Double Solitaire in the part of the daughter.
