About Rob Base
When Rob Base was in the fifth grade, he started performing with a group that was named the Sureshot Seven. When he and DJ E-Z Rock, who was born in Rodney Bryce, Harlem, were the only members of the group left by the time he graduated from high school, the duo decided to start recording on their own.
After the success of the duo’s first single and release in the United States, Profile Records offered the group a recording contract in 1987. It Takes Two was the first song that Profile ever released.
Multiple samples were taken from the James Brown and Lyn Collins song “Think (About It)” which was released in 1972. The song initially enjoyed success on a local level, and after making steady progress up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it was eventually certified as a multi-platinum single. Additionally, the song reached its highest position on the chart that tracks Hot Dance Music/Club Play at No. 3.
Rob Base, on the other hand, had to go it alone by the end of 1989. “personal problems.” according to him, were the only thing that could account for DJ E-Z Rock’s disappearance. The publication of The Incredible Base in 1989 was somewhat of a letdown. Despite the album containing several noteworthy tunes, including a rearrangement of Edwin Starr’s “War,” none of the singles from the album clicked with fans.
The band quickly put together an album that was also titled It Takes Two, and it produced a significant follow-up hit called “Joy and Pain” This song sampled a song by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly with the same name, and it also sampled a song by The Olympic Runners called “Put the Music Where Your Mouth Is”
In addition to that, it reached position No. 10 on the dance chart and moved up to position No. 58 on the Hot 100. In 1989, the song “Get On the Dance Floor” which was produced by David Wynn (also known as DJ Wynn) and distributed to clubs in the interim between the two songs, reached number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. It Takes Two was certified seven times over as a platinum album as a direct result of the singles that were released from the album.
The album Break of Dawn, which Base and E-Z Rock collaborated on in 1994, did not have a significant impact on the music industry. Their song “It Takes Two” was named number 37 on VH1’s list of the 100 best hip hop songs of all time in the year 2008.
While E-Z Rock continued his career as a DJ, Base stayed active as a performer throughout the 2010s but did not release another album during that time. After E-Z Rock passed away in 2014 from complications related to diabetes, he was posthumously inducted into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame later that same year.
