In the 1950s, Atkins grew to the ranks of producer at RCA Victor Records, where he’d developed a relationship with Steve Sholes. In the 1950s, he helped push a softer sound to help compete with rock ‘n’ roll; it later became dubbed the Nashville Sound. In the ’60s he also worked on solo records. In 1973, he was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
