“I find it very difficult to make up a story about something that hasn’t happened. It’s personal stuff that a song comes from, but you hope that whatever you’ve been through is a universal emotion.” — Peter Frampton

  • 1976’s Frampton Comes Alive became the best-selling live album of all time and held that title for more than 20 years
  • Frampton was nearly killed in a car crash in the Bahamas in 1978
  • He became a U.S. citizen and political activist following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001

Fame Came Early

Frampton was just eight years old when he first picked up a guitar. He received classical training for several years, and in his teens played in a succession of rock combos, one of which was managed by Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman. In 1966, he left high school to join The Herd, and quickly became a teen idol in Britain. He left that group in 1969 and joined Steve Marriott (Small Faces) to form Humble Pie. Two years later, he left to start a solo career.

Four studio albums between 1972 and 1975 were largely ignored, but tickets to Frampton’s live concerts were highly sought after. Not coincidentally, he finally broke through in 1976 with the live album Frampton Comes Alive, which was recorded the year before at San Francisco’s Winterland. The album shot to the top of the album charts where it stayed for ten weeks, selling more than 16-million copies.

The good looks that had helped make him a teen idol no doubt had something to do with his being cast in the wildly unsuccessful feature film “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” One of the first guitarists to use a device (talkbox) that replicates human speech through a guitar, Frampton achieved a degree of infamy in the 1990s doing infomercials for computer software that he claimed was better than actual lessons for learning to play guitar.

Frampton returned to his early classical music training, performing with a symphony orchestra and releasing an album of classical guitar instrumentals.

In 2014, Frampton released a new album entitled Hummingbird in a Box. Then in 2015, Frampton announced his new studio album: Acoustic Classics. In 2016, Frampton was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2017 and 2018, Frampton toured with the Steve Miller Band, opening the show.

In June 2019, his most recent album, All Blues, debuted at number one in the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart. In December, 2019, Frampton announced his farewell UK tour to consist of five performances in May 2020. In April the UK/EU tour was unfortunately cancelled “because of the COVID-19 virus.”

As of 2023, Peter Frampton’s net worth is estimated to be $35 million.
