About Tisha Campbell
Campbell made her television debut in 1974 on an episode of The Big Blue Marble on PBS. The young performer was a talent show champion and went on to star in series like Kids Are People Too, Unicorn Tales (in which she played the lead role of Daisy Bunsen in the episode The Magnificent Major), and Captain Kangaroo. During her senior year of high school, she and future co-star and best friend Tichina Arnold appeared in Little Shop of Horrors as Chiffon, a member of the Supremes-esque female group Greek Chorus.
Campbell was born in Oklahoma City, but she spent much of her childhood in Newark, New Jersey, where she graduated from Newark Arts High School and went on to study at Washington Academy of Music in nearby East Orange.
Her mother, now known as Mona Washington, was a nurse, talent manager, gospel singer, and vocal instructor by her former name of Mona (née Raye) Shockley. Her chess-master dad, former factory worker and vocalist Clifton Campbell, helps disadvantaged kids. The musical interests she showed were supported by her parents.
Campbell featured with Eddie Murphy in the action comedy Another 48 Hrs (1990) and in the crime picture Rooftops (1989). Later, she co-starred with Murphy in the romantic comedy Boomerang (1992). House Party, a 1990 comedy, was her breakout role and earned her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award as Best Supporting Female.
In the 1990s and 2000s, she was featured in a number of music videos, including those by Will Smith (“Will 2K”) and Toni Braxton (“You’re Makin’ Me High”). Campbell appeared in the “Hello” music video by Mindless Behavior in 2012. Campbell started appearing on the Fox comedy Martin as Regina “Gina” Waters-Payne in 1992. She then appeared in House Party 2 (1991) and House Party 3 (1996) as a co-star (1994).
Campbell’s first album, Tisha, was released in 1993 and sold over 40,000 copies. Two of Campbell’s singles, “Push” and “Love Me Down,” saw limited R&B radio. “Push” was co-written and produced by Campbell’s pal Vanilla Ice. Campbell and her Martin co-star Tichina Arnold covered the song “Don’t Ask My Neighbor” for the film’s soundtrack. “Sprung” was released in 1997.
After a sexual harassment complaint against Martin Lawrence was settled in April 1997, she decided to leave the program Martin. The next year she co-starred with Diahann Carroll in the Hallmark Hall of Fame film The Sweetest Gift (1998).
Campbell married actor Duane Martin on August 17, 1996. Their kids, Xen Martin and Ezekiel Czar Martin, are a joy to their parents. After 21 years of marriage, Campbell filed for divorce in February 2018. In December of 2020, the divorce was finalized.
Her first leading part was in the Trimark Pictures comedy Sprung from 1997. Later, she played the protagonist in the indie drama The Last Place on Earth (2002) and the sarcastic wife of Craig Robinson’s character in Kevin Smith’s sex comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008).
In 2001, Campbell made her TV comeback on the ABC sitcom My Wife and Kids, co-starring with Damon Wayans. Five full seasons were broadcast between 2000 and 2005. She was honored with the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in 2003 for her work in the role.
Campbell established the nonprofit Colored My Mind in 2011 to educate people of color about autism in children. Her 18-month-old son, Xen, was diagnosed with autism, and this prompted her to begin the charity.
The single “Steel Here” was released on September 21, 2015. Campbell’s track “Lazy Bitch” which features her friend Tasha Smith, was released on February 24, 2016, along with a music video. She joined the ABC sitcom Dr. Ken, starring Ken Jeong, in September of 2015.
Campbell’s latest single, “I Don’t Wanna Be Alone Tonight” came out on February 2, 2018. On October 6, 2019, Campbell dropped her new track “22 Summers,” along with a music video. After airing for two seasons, the show was canceled that same year. Early in 2018, she portrayed Simone Biles‘s mom in the Lifetime biopic The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar. Campbell then acted in the ABC drama pilot The Holmes Sisters, which followed the lives of five sisters who were all NYPD cops despite being of African descent. Those two women, Regina King and Robin Roberts, were the producers.
