About Jim Cantore
Cantore has been praised for his ability to “break down” complex meteorological occurrences into terms that may be understood by the common viewer. When severe weather strikes, Cantore is frequently called upon to report on the situation. Cantore has become a well-known character due to the fact that the Weather Channel’s viewership tend to rise whenever one of these incidents takes place.
Cantore was born in Beacon Falls, Connecticut, but spent the majority of his childhood in White River Junction, Vermont. He received his degree in 1986 from Lyndon State College. In July of that year, The Weather Channel provided him with his first job after he from college, and he has continued to work there ever since. Cantore is now widely recognized as one of the most well-known television meteorologists. Cantore was described as the “rock star of meteorologists” in an article that was published in the Lincoln (Nebraska) Journal Star by Algis Laukaitis.
Cantore has periodically stood in for Al Roker on The Today Show ever since NBCUniversal completed its purchase of The Weather Channel in 2008. In addition, he hosted weather portions for NBC during the Summer Olympics in London in 2012 while he was in the city.
In particular, viewers’ association of Cantore’s presence with impending or currently occurring severe weather events became so strong that the Weather Channel lampooned it in a one-minute commercial spot in 2011. In the spot, Cantore goes on a beach vacation, causing panic among nearby beachgoers and locals who take his presence as a portent of doom.
Cantore was confronted by a student called Colin Marcelli on the 28th of January, 2014 at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. At the time, Cantore was doing a live on-location report at the college. After noticing the charge, Cantore knelt down behind Marcelli and gave him a knee to the groin. Marcelli bolted out of the room instantly. Cantore never diverted his train of thought nor gave any indication that he was becoming flustered during the episode. He has covered a wide variety of events in the media, including the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery, the “Winter X Games,” PGA tournaments, NFL games, and more. Jim is a part of both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association (NWA and AMS, respectively). The AMS Television Seal of Approval has been awarded to him. In recognition of his pioneering work in the application of environmental satellite technology, the NOAA presented him with the David S. Johnson Award in 2003.
Cantore was reporting on the effects of Winter Storm Neptune along the South Shore of Massachusetts on February 14, 2015. During his coverage of the storm, a powerful band of thundersnow slammed the area, which caused Cantore to respond passionately to the existence of the extremely rare phenomena. On YouTube, the clip of his reaction has amassed more than 5 million views at this point.
