Broadcast journalist Elizabeth Vargas was born in Paterson, N.J. Her father was a United States Army colonel who traveled with his family all over the world. Vargas spent most of her youth in Germany and Belgium. She returned to the U.S. after high school graduation to attend the University of Missouri. There Vargas studied journalism and communications. She also made her television debut as a reporter on the school’s television station, KOMU-TV.

From KOMU, Vargas took a job with WBBM, a CBS affiliate in Chicago, Ill. There Vargas proved her talents by demonstrating her versatility, one moment involved in investigative reporting, the next interviewing a pop-culture icon or a wrapping a bow around a local feature story.

Vargas spent four years in Chicago before making the leap to NBC News. She started as a correspondent for Dateline NBC. She also substituted from time to time on The Today Show.

Vargas would eventually co-anchor World News Tonight with Bob Woodruff. Woodruff would receive a traumatic head injury while covering the war in Iraq. While recovering, Vargas would solo anchor the evening news or co-host with either Charlie Gibson or Diane Sawyer.

In 2006, Vargas resigned from World News Tonight because of a difficult pregnancy. Though it is widely speculated that Vargas knew she wouldn’t return from her maternity leave as co-anchor of World News Tonight. It is said that Charlie Gibson threatened to leave the network if he wasn’t made the sole anchor of the evening news.

Today she still co-anchors 20/20 while hosting a wide variety of ABC News Specials.

As of December 2012, she is also co-hosting, from time to time, Good Morning America Live!, ABC’s new online-only extension of the GMA brand. The show takes place directly after the morning broadcast of GMA.
