Sam was born on May 2nd, 1989, in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. His father has ancestry in Hong Kong and his mother is from Iowa. He participated in high school musicals, such as Titanic, Miss Saigon, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Urinetown. Sam studied at the Yale University, where he was a member of an all-male a cappella group.
