About Remy Ma
Mackie was raised in the Castle Hill Projects after being born in the Bronx. Early on, she was exposed to her family’s drug use. She had to start caring for her younger siblings at a young age, and she turned to poetry to escape the problems in her home life. As word of her success spread around the Bronx, Big Pun ultimately became aware of her. Pun took Ma under his wing and served as her mentor following their encounter and freestyle session. On the tracks “Ms. Martin” and “You Was Wrong” off Big Pun’s album Yeeeah Baby, Ma debuted as a singer going by the stage name “Remy Martin.”

Remy Ma wrote poems and songs for the most of her childhood. That was her way of getting away from a strict upbringing and a lot of duties; at the age of 12, young Remy had to take care of her four younger siblings.
Remy’s talent for poetry, in addition to the outstanding grades she earned in school, was what kept her alive. She used poems to express her annoyance with the world instead of at it. She soon started competing in freestyle fights at school. She quickly transitioned from fighting with students at school to fighting on the streets. Her landslide victory over fellow femcee Lady Luck is still her most well-known matchup to date.
Remy began making appearances on mixtapes when word of her lyrical prowess spread. Her first significant cameo appearance was on the remix of M.O.P.’s monster hit, “Ante Up.” Pun, who created the Terror Squad alongside Fat Joe, swiftly enlisted Remy Ma after a freestyle session. Remy’s career was put on hold for a while after Pun’s unexpected death.
Lean Back, a song by anti-dance rapper Remy that was produced by Scott Storch, would ultimately advance Remy’s chances of having a successful solo career. Steve Rifkind, the head of SRC Records, was persuaded by Remy’s brief presence on the Grammy-nominated Terror Squad hit that she merits a chance on the main stage.
There’s Something About Remy: Based On A True Story, Remy’s debut album, was released on February 7, 2006, the sixth anniversary of Big Pun’s passing. The album did poorly on the charts despite providing a well-balanced mix of mainstream songs and street songs. Remy launched a radio rant against Fat Joe, blamed the failure on Terror Squad’s bad marketing efforts, and eventually left her crew.
On February 13, 2007, Ma informed Billboard that she was hard at work on PunisHer, her sophomore album, as well as a joint project with Shawnna and Jacki-O as part of the all-female rap supergroup 3Sum.
Remy was detained in July 2007 after shooting Makeda Barnes-Joseph in a Manhattan nightclub. Following her conviction on charges of assault, use of a weapon, and attempted coercion, she was given an eight-year jail term on May 13, 2008. She argued that the shooting was unintentional.
Barnes-Joseph had to endure many operations as a result of the gunshot. Barnes-Joseph sued Smith for $80 million in damages and pain and suffering in a civil action in 2007. Smith was slated for release in 2015, according to her attorneys, after serving an eight-year sentence at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Bedford Hills, New York, a part of Westchester County.
Ma served six years in prison until being freed in 2014.
She released the mixtape I’m Around on October 31, 2014. She released Remy on the Rocks, a collection of different songs from her mixtapes, on April 28, 2015.
Ma and her husband Papoose made the announcement that they would be appearing on the sixth season of Love & Hip Hop: New York on July 7, 2015.
Fat Joe announced in 2016 that he and Ma would be putting out a joint album. The collaborative album’s title, Plata O Plomo, which means “money or bullets” in Spanish, was formally announced on March 2, 2016.
Ma founded Conceited, a women’s clothing business, on August 20, 2017, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Ma released “Wake Me Up,” the lead song off her new album, which was originally known as 7 Winters, 6 Summers, on November 16, 2017. Lil’ Kim, a fellow rapper from New York, appeared on it, and a portion of her song “Queen Bitch” from her 1996 album Hard Core was sampled.

Reminisce was the new name for the album, which Ma revealed during an appearance on the radio program The Breakfast Club in March 2020. She also said that a release date was being decided.
