About Nate Burleson
Burleson was born in Canada’s Calgary, Alberta. Al Burleson, his father, was a defensive back with the Calgary Stampeders at the time in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was raised in a close-knit, successful sporting family.
He represented the University of Nevada, Reno, in collegiate football. He had 138 receptions in the 2002 season, which is the second-highest total in NCAA history. He topped the NCAA in both receiving yards and receptions per game during his final year. He made a total of 248 receptions for 3,293 yards and 22 touchdowns while he was a student at Nevada.
In the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected him to play in the National Football League (NFL). Burleson also played for the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks.
Due to Randy Moss’s injury in his second season, 2004, Burleson was given the chance to take over as the team’s top receiver. Burleson achieved over 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career and put up impressive stats.
Burleson agreed to a seven-year, $49 million offer sheet to play for his hometown Seattle Seahawks on March 24, 2006. According to the offer sheet, Burleson’s entire $49 million would be guaranteed if he participated in five Minnesota games in a single season or if his annual average topped the sum of the annual averages of the other running backs on the club.
The Vikings played eight home games per season in Minneapolis, and at the time of the offer sheet, the organization was paying its whole group of running backs significantly less than $7 million annually. However, Seattle was investing more than $7 million annually in just one of its running backs (Shaun Alexander). Burleson holds the Seahawks’ record for both career and single-season punt return yards, both of which were set in 2007.
On March 5, 2010, early in the NFL free agency season, Burleson and the Detroit Lions reached an agreement on a five-year, $25 million contract.
For his dealings with the media in 2011, Burleson was given the Media-Friendly “Good Guy Award” by the Detroit Lions, Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, and Pro Football Writers Association. However, it was claimed that Burleson lost control of his automobile while attempting to stop a pizza from falling over a seat. On February 13, 2014, the Lions released him.
Burleson signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on April 6, 2014, but was released on August 30.
Burleson is currently employed by Paramount (formerly ViacomCBS), where she co-hosts CBS Mornings and covers football for CBS on The NFL Today and Nickelodeon. He formerly served as a New York correspondent for the entertainment news program Extra and co-hosted Good Morning Football on the NFL Network.
