The son of sales manager Charles Morse and schoolteacher Jacquelyn Morse, Morse was born on October 11, 1953, in Beverly, Massachusetts. He was brought up in Hamilton, Massachusetts and Essex, Massachusetts. Mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch is the origin of his middle name, Bowditch.

Morse studied acting at the William Esper Studio after graduating from high school in 1971. In the early 1970s, he joined the Boston Repertory Theatre as a player before beginning his acting career.
