About David Morse
The son of sales manager Charles Morse and schoolteacher Jacquelyn Morse, Morse was born on October 11, 1953, in Beverly, Massachusetts. He was brought up in Hamilton, Massachusetts and Essex, Massachusetts. Mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch is the origin of his middle name, Bowditch.
Morse studied acting at the William Esper Studio after graduating from high school in 1971. In the early 1970s, he joined the Boston Repertory Theatre as a player before beginning his acting career.
Esquire Jauchem, the creative director of the Boston Repertory Theater, developed and directed a stage musical adaptation of The Point! in the middle of the 1970s, with an 18-year-old Morse as Oblio in the lead role.
In the television movie Hack from 2002, Morse played Mike Olshansky, a former Philadelphia police officer who is now a cab driver. Morse received the first-ever Golden Horse Award nomination for an actor who speaks English for his part in the 2002 crime-drama movie Shuang Tong as Best Supporting Actor. He starred in the 2007 film Disturbia as the dubious neighbor Mr. Turner.
Morse was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2006 for his work as Detective Michael Tritter on the medical drama series House. He received a second Emmy nomination for his performance as George Washington in the HBO miniseries John Adams, which aired in 2008.
He won the Drama Desk Award and the Obie Award for his performance of Uncle Peck in the Off-Broadway production of How I Learned to Drive. His performance as James “Sharky” Harkin in The Seafarer enjoyed popularity on Broadway. In the HBO series Treme from 2010 to 2013, he played Terry Colson, a decent cop working for a dishonest New Orleans police force.
Morse acted in the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora (2018), the Netflix comedy drama series The Chair, the WGN America series Outsiders (2016–17), and the Netflix comedy drama series The Chair (2021).
Morse continues to perform on stage in addition to his work in cinema and television. He won an Obie Award, a Drama League Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Lucille Lortel Award for his portrayal in the 1997 Off-Broadway production of Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama How I Learned to Drive. He played Father Barry in the On the Waterfront play adaption that same year.
Morse performed in Conor McPherson’s drama The Seafarer on Broadway from 2007 to 2008. For his performance in the 2018 Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh, he was nominated for a Tony Award.
