About H. Jon Benjamin
Benjamin was born to a Jewish family in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 23, 1966. His mother Shirley was a former ballet dancer who instructed dance at a studio, while his father Howard served as the CEO of an electric firm. He earned degrees from Connecticut College in 1988 and Worcester Academy in 1984.
Benjamin’s career in comedy had its start in Boston, where he performed with Sam Seder in a comedy duet before joining David Cross’s troupe, Cross Comedy. Benjamin spent the first seven years of his career working almost completely in teams rather than alone. After that, his own work stayed more experimental and rejected conventional stand-up comedy techniques.
On December 17, 1999, he appeared as a guest on Space Ghost Coast to Coast’s eighty-first episode, “King Dead,” when Zorak and Moltar abducted him. He co-starred in Todd Barry’s short film Borrowing Saffron and appeared in the movie Wet Hot American Summer as a talking can of vegetables with a dishonorable tendency to autofellatio.
He and David Cross co-created Freak Show. In the one-season series Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil, which debuted on Adult Swim on September 9, 2007, Benjamin played the Devil among other roles. Benjamin announces both The Sam Seder Show and The Majority Report in addition to playing a recurrent role on the PBS Kids program WordGirl. Sam Seder’s accountant, “Shelly,” was voiced by him in the episode of Breakroom Live with Maron & Seder.
Benjamin and David Cross produced and scripted Paid Programming, a live-action pilot for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, in 2009. Paid Programming was a “abject failure” because it wasn’t picked up for a complete series.
Conan O’Brien and Benjamin appeared in a Super Bowl XLIII Bud Light commercial together. Benjamin also created the McCain Girls YouTube videos.
He provides the voice of secret agent Sterling Archer in the FX sitcom Archer, which debuted on January 14, 2010. With comic Leo Allen, Benjamin co-created the Comedy Central series Jon Benjamin Has a Van, which he also acted in. The first episode of the 10-episode season aired on May 14, 2011, and the final one on August 10, 2011.
Beginning in 2013, Benjamin’s voice may be heard narrating a number of Coke Zero television ads, some of which have connections to ESPN’s College Game Day show. For his performance on Bob’s Burgers and Archer, Benjamin was voted the year’s finest male comedy performer by the Vulture TV Awards, a digital offshoot of New York magazine, in 2014.
Despite not having any musical training, Benjamin published his debut jazz album, Well, I Should Have, in 2015. Along with Scott Kreitzer on sax, David Finck on bass, and Jonathan Preitz on drums, Benjamin “played” the piano.
Failure is an Option: An Attempted Memoir, a humorous autobiography written by Benjamin, was released by Penguin Random House in May 2018. The audiobook was also read by him. As the new spokesman for the Arby’s food business, Benjamin debuted in ads in 2018.
Benjamin backed Bernie Sanders for president in January 2020 and narrated a number of films on Sanders’ health care ideas.
