About Michael Anthony
Before joining Van Halen, Anthony was a member of the three-piece band Snake, where he was responsible for lead vocals and bass guitar. After that, Anthony joined Van Halen. In addition to some of their own songs, Snake performed cover versions of songs like ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Foghat. They participated in a number of gigs that were comparable to those that the band Mammoth of the Van Halen brothers played. At one point, Snake served as the opening act for Mammoth during a performance at Pasadena High School. That night, Mammoth’s PA did not work, so Anthony gave them Snake’s PA to use instead.
Anthony spent some of his childhood in Chicago. During Anthony’s childhood, the family relocated to California on two separate occasions before finally settling in Arcadia in 1966. Between the years 1967 and 1969, Anthony was a student at Dana Junior High School, which was located in Arcadia, California.
When Anthony was a youngster, he developed an interest in playing guitar, but he ended up switching to bass instead because the majority of his other pals already played guitar or drums. Anthony’s close buddy Mike Hershey surprised him by giving him an electric Fender Mustang guitar. Anthony decided to play it as a bass guitar, so he removed the two strings at the highest position on the instrument.
Anthony Van Halen was introduced to him while he was a student at Pasadena City College, where he was majoring in music. Eddie Van Halen was also a student there. During this same period, bass player Mark Stone left Mammoth, and the Van Halens considered trying Anthony out for the position of bass player in their band. Despite the fact that Anthony had previously listened to the brothers play, he was blown away by their talent during the subsequent jam sessions. Following the session, the Van Halen brothers extended an invitation to Anthony to become a member of their band.
In 1974, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Anthony became known as Van Halen. They had previously been performing under the name Mammoth, but they decided to change their name after learning that another local band was using the same name. Van Halen was signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1977 after the band had proven themselves on the club circuit in Los Angeles and West Hollywood, as well as having Gene Simmons of Kiss produce a 29-track demo for them.

When Eddie and Alex requested Sammy Hagar to get back together with the band at the end of 2003 for a tour in 2004, the original idea was to not welcome Anthony back. Hagar, on the other hand, was adamant about not playing if Anthony did not come back, and Anthony eventually consented to perform despite the fact that he would receive less money for his royalties. Only the duration of the tour was included in the contract that was drawn up.
During the summer of 2006, Anthony was on the road with Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas as a member of the band Other Half, which was supporting that leg of the tour. Anthony and Hagar’s renditions of classic Van Halen songs, spanning both the Roth and Hagar eras, were featured on the album The Other Half.
On his personal website, which he calls “Mad Anthony’s Cafe” Anthony markets and sells a variety of signature items, including hot sauce, BBQ sauce, and hot mustard. His commercial food line is the result of a partnership with a restaurant in San Diego, California that is famous for its hot sauces.
Sammy Hagar and the Circle is a supergroup that was established in 2014 and contains Hagar, in addition to guitarist Vic Johnson and drummer Jason Bonham. Anthony is a member of Sammy Hagar and the Circle.
