About Kevin Harlan
Harlan was the voice of Westwood One Radio’s Final Four broadcast until 2008. First announcing a Super Bowl in 2010, when he was Westwood One’s primary announcer for Monday Night Football, he went on to broadcast Super Bowl XLV. Through Westwood One, he has covered 12 straight Super Bowls (XLV-LVI). Throughout the whole history of radio and television networks, twelve is the highest number of appearances in a row (Jack Buck broadcast nine straight). Harlan aired the CBS High-Definition feed of Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
Harlan got his start in radio as a youngster, calling games for the Our Lady of Premontre High School boys’ basketball, football, and ice hockey teams on the school’s radio station, WGBP-FM. The school’s Hall of Fame just inducted him. In his teens, he worked as a ball boy for the Green Bay Packers while his father, Bob Harlan, was an executive there.
2022 is his 38th consecutive season calling NFL games, while the 2022–23 NBA season will be his 37th as a broadcaster. He is a two time National Sportscaster of the Year. He has called more games than anyone else in history for one of the four major sports on network television.
When the NBA’s Kansas City Kings hired Harlan in 1982, he was just 22 years old and fresh out of college (now the Sacramento Kings). He was subsequently a basketball announcer for his alma mater, the University of Kansas, for one year, then went on to call games for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs from 1985–93 following several years hosting and creating surrounding pre-game and post-game programming while still in college. After nine seasons as the play-by-play voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association, Harlan spent two years (1986–1989) calling football and basketball games at the University of Missouri (1989–98).
They’ve been married for 35 years, and Harlan and Ann have four kids and three grandkids. Their daughter Olivia is an ESPN sideline reporter and the wife of a Wisconsin-born NBA player (in Sheboygan).
Harlan worked for NBC to broadcast NFL games in 1991, for ESPN to do the same for college football in 1992 and 1993, for Fox to do the same in 1994 through 1997, and for Turner Sports to do the same for NBA playoff games in 1996. In 2022, Harlan covered the NBA Finals for TNT and was the play-by-play announcer for the NBA All-Star Game. In 1998, after four years at FOX, he moved on to CBS.
And since 2003, he’s been doing play-by-play for the Packers preseason games on the state-wide TV network where the team plays. He was chosen as the best sportscaster in the country in 2017 and again in 2019. Including this year’s game, Harlan has called 13 Super Bowls and 5 Final Fours. Along with Dick Stockton and Marv Albert, he is one of only three announcers in the history of the four major sports to have more than 3000 broadcasts on a national network.
