About Kevin Federline
We were all introduced to K-Fed when he married Britney Spears, who met Kevin when he was performing as her backup dancer. But the dancer/rapper owes the tabloids for making him a household name.
Kevin Earl Federline was born in Fresno, California on March 21, 1978. Federline’s parents divorced when he was eight, and he lived with his mother and brother until both boys decided to move back to Fresno with their father.
Never one for school, Federline dropped out in the ninth grade and began dancing with a non-profit organization called Dance Empowerment. He eventually earned his GED and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dance career full time. Federline spent his first few years in Los Angeles backup dancing in tours and music videos for an impressive roster of stars including Michael Jackson, Pink and Destiny’s Child. Despite the big name bosses, Federline was discouraged by the lack of credit he received as a dancer and longed for his big break.
That break finally came in 2004, when Federline’s club moves caught the eye of Britney Spears during a hiatus from her tour. The two began dating while Federline was already attached to ex-Moesha star Shar Jackson, who was then six months pregnant with his second child.
The tabloids were in heaven over Spears’ controversial new romance and it wasn’t long before Federline ditched Jackson altogether and started playing house with his new superstar flame. The lovebirds announced their engagement after three months of dating, and married in September of 2004.
In 2005, Federline appeared alongside Spears in the celebreality show Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, but the show was unsuccessful and only ran for one season. Federline also appeared on CSI and released a debut album called Playing With Fire, but that too was universally panned and sold only 6,500 copies its first week.
While Federline tried to make it in showbiz, Spears gave birth to the couple’s first son, Sean Preston, in September of 2005, and quickly followed up with baby number two, Jayden James, in September of 2006. She blasted rumors of marital unhappiness, but filed for divorce two months after the birth of Jayden.
Spears rebounded from the split by hitting the clubs with her new friend Paris Hilton while Federline played it safe and put his focus on his family and career. Both parents asked for sole custody of their children and took their battle to the courts, but they put their differences aside when Spears checked into rehab in February of 2007.
After her release, Federline was named one of Details magazine’s 50 Most Influential Men Under 45 for being a good father despite his troubled circumstances. After Spears’ very public meltdown and hospitalization in early 2008, Federline was awarded sole custody of his sons and a generous child support fund. They reached a custody agreement later that year, and have been living relatively amicably ever since.
Federline has kept a relatively low profile since the end of his feud with Spears, focusing on fatherhood over fame. He appeared on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club opposite his ex-flame Jackson after his weight shot up to 232 pounds in early 2010, and recently announced baby number five with his current girlfriend, ex-volleyball player Victoria Prince. The couple later married in 2013 and have been happily married since.
It’s hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything. For me, I’d become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important.”
