About Joe Jackson
Jackson describes himself in his memoir The Jacksons as a “lonely boy that had just few friends,” recalling how his father was severe and overbearing when he was a young child. He relocated to East Chicago when he was 18 to live with his mother, two brothers, and sister after his father remarried.
He immediately secured employment with Inland Steel Company in East Chicago, although he did not complete high school. He started to pursue his goals of being a boxer while living in East Chicago and had success with the Golden Gloves program.
While moonlighting with his brother Luther in a blues band in his early 20s, Joe met Katherine Scruse, whom he later married in November 1949. The newlyweds in Gary, Indiana, bought a modest two-bedroom house on 2300 Jackson Street close to East Chicago. Four months later, on May 29, 1950, in the Jackson home, Maureen Reillette “Rebbie” Jackson was born.
Jackson’s younger brother Luther Jackson and him played guitar in their own blues group called The Falcons during the early 1950s. The Falcons tried their best, but they were unsuccessful in landing a record deal. As a result, they disbanded after one of their members, Thornton “Pookie” Hudson, started a new band in 1952. The Spaniels, a popular doo-wop group, were formed from that band.
Joe Jackson encouraged his sons to pursue music in the early 1960s when they started tinkering with his instruments while he was at work. His three oldest boys, Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine, were the first to whom he began working. The Jackson Brothers was the moniker used initially by the group. The Jackson 5 was the group’s new name once Marlon and Michael were added to it.
Steeltown issued the group’s debut single, “Big Boy,” on January 31, 1968, with Michael serving as the lead vocalist. Within a year, Jackson assisted in getting his boys a Motown Records audition. In March 1969, The Jackson 5 signed a recording deal with Motown.
Inspired by the success of fellow family act The Osmonds, Jackson decided to reestablish his authority in 1973 by having his family, including youngest son Randy, daughters Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet, perform in casinos and resorts in the Las Vegas area.
It was said that Joseph had a protracted extramarital relationship. On March 9, 1973, Katherine filed for divorce with a clerk of the Los Angeles County, but she later abandoned the case. Except for Jermaine, who stayed with Motown Records as a solo artist, the group signed a contract with Epic Records after leaving Motown Records in 1975.
Randy, the youngest son of Joseph, issued his lone song “How Can I Be Sure” on Joseph’s record company in 1978. While managing Janet Jackson in 1982, Joseph launched her career as a recording artist and an actress. He paid Janet’s first demo’s recording and secured her a recording deal with A&M Records.
In 1982, Katherine tried to divorce her husband once more but was once more convinced to give up the effort. Even though they didn’t live together, Joe and Katherine were nonetheless legally wed until his passing in 2018. Joseph and Katherine were not estranged, according to Katherine.
When his late son Michael was given a Lifetime Achievement Award and posthumously inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014, Jackson accepted the honor on Michael’s behalf.
In 2011, Joe was previously enshrined in the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame.
While in Brazil to celebrate his 87th birthday, Jackson experienced a stroke and a heart arrhythmia on July 27, 2015, and was taken to the hospital. On August 11, when he arrived in Los Angeles, he received treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to treat his post-stroke blurred eyesight.
Jackson was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, close to Los Angeles, on July 2, 2018. His son Michael was laid to rest in the same Southern California cemetery in 2009.
