King graduated from Boston Latin School and the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. King began working with the Associated Press as a writer in 1985. King was appointed chief political correspondent in 1991 and was in charge of the AP’s political coverage of the presidential elections in 1992 and 1996. Also in 1991, King’s coverage of the Gulf War in Kuwait earned him the highest reporting award from the Associated Press Managing Editors’ Association.
King joined CNN in 1997 and worked there as the network’s senior White House correspondent from 1999 until 2005. King was appointed CNN’s chief national correspondent in 2005, a position he still holds today.
