Houghton is the recipient of a total of six awards, including three Grammys for the category of Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album and one Grammy for the category of Best Traditional Gospel Album for the album Alive In South Africa. A review published in Christianity Today in 2003 called the album that Houghton produced for Michael Gungor, titled Bigger Than My Imagination, “one of the year’s best worship albums” Houghton was the album’s producer.
Houghton was born to a white mother and an Afro-Jamaican father, so he has a biracial background. His mother is white, and his father is black from Jamaica. Houghton was married to Meleasa Houghton from 1994 until the couple divorced on February 22, 2016, after having separated in 2015. The divorce was completed on that day.
Although the musician was married at the time, he also had two sons with his mistress, DeVawn Moreno. After a number of months of dating, Houghton tied the knot with singer and television personality Adrienne Bailon on November 11, 2016, in the city of Paris.
In the year 2022, the couple became parents for the first time, to a son who was delivered by a surrogate. Israel Houghton’s band is called New Breed, and they are his backing band. A significant portion of Israel’s discography is distributed under the Israel & New Breed moniker.
