About George Jung
In 1994, Jung was taken into custody in Topeka, Kansas, for possessing 1,754 pounds (796 kg) of cocaine. Later on, he entered a guilty plea to three counts of conspiracy and was sentenced to a total of seventy years in prison. However, after testifying against his former business partner Carlos Lehder, his sentence was reduced to roughly twenty years.
After serving his time at the Otisville Federal Prison (Medium Security), which is located in Mount Hope, New York, Jung was moved to the Federal Correctional Institution, Fort Dix (Low Security), which is located in New Jersey Jung was moved to the Federal Correctional Institution, La Tuna (Low Security), which is in Anthony, Texas.
On August 6, 1942, George Jung was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, to parents Frederick Jung, who had a small business, and Ermine (née O’Neill) Jung. His grandfather was also named Frederick Jung. In high school, Jung was a standout on the football team and was regarded as “a natural leader” by his classmates. Despite these accolades, Jung was accused with soliciting prostitution by a police officer working undercover.
Soon after receiving his diploma from Weymouth High School in 1961, Jung enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi for a short time before deciding against pursuing a degree in the advertising program there. Jung started smoking marijuana for recreational purposes and sold a percentage of what he bought to get back to even financially.
Carlos Lehder was a young German Colombian man when he was Jung’s cellmate at FCI Danbury in March 1974. Lehder introduced Jung to the dominant and powerful international drug-trafficking Medelln Cartel; in return, Jung taught Lehder about smuggling. Jung was serving a sentence for his role in the trafficking of marijuana at the time.
After being freed from prison in 1976, Jung and Lehder collaborated with Pablo Escobar to smuggle significant quantities of cocaine into the United States. As a result of their efforts, they amassed a fortune of several million dollars.
The novel Heavy was co-written by Jung and T. Rafael Cimino, who is the nephew of film director Michael Cimino, and was published in September of 2014. The book Heavy is a work of fiction that tells the account of Jung evading capture in Cuba and making his way to Guatemala.
After spending over 20 years in jail, Jung was finally let out of jail on June 2, 2014, even though his original release date was November 2014. In 2017, he was released from a halfway house after serving time in prison for violating the terms of his federal supervision in 2016.

In the movie “Blow,” Johnny Depp represented Jung on the big screen (2001). When Jung passed away on May 5, 2021, at his home in Weymouth, Massachusetts, he was getting hospice care for his liver and kidney failure, which he had been suffering from for some time.
