About Dexter Holland
The Offspring became a member of the Epitaph Records roster in the year 1991. The band’s debut album, titled Ignition, was issued by the label for the first time in the year 1992. Smash, released in 1994, was their final album for that label. It is still the album that holds the world record for the greatest sales of any album released by an independent label.
After that, in 1996, the band signed with Columbia Records (Holland claims that Brett Gurewitz, owner of Epitaph and guitarist for Bad Religion, sold the contract to Columbia), for whom they released their next six albums, Ixnay on the Hombre (1997), Americana (1998), Conspiracy of One (2000), Splinter (2003), Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008), and Days Go By. Ixnay on the Hombre was released in 1997.
Holland received his high school education at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California, and in 1984 he graduated as the school’s valedictorian. During his senior year of high school, Holland was the top student in his class when it came to mathematics, and he thought the subject to be “just as exciting as punk rock”.
After that, he went on to acquire a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Southern California, a Master of Science degree in molecular biology from the same institution, and finally a Doctor of Philosophy degree in molecular biology from the same institution in 2017.
After the Offspring achieved fame, he decided to halt his studies in order to focus on music, but he was able to successfully restart his studies and successfully defend his doctoral thesis in May of 2017. Aerosmith, the Beatles, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, KISS, Bob Marley, Queen, and the Rolling Stones were some of Holland’s early musical influences.
Manic Subsidal was the name of the punk band that he co-founded in 1984 with his close friend and fellow runner on the cross-country team, Greg K. Holland, who played the drums. After being sent away from a Social Distortion concert, the two members decided to establish their own band. After they brought in Jim Benton as their new drummer, Holland shifted his focus to singing and playing guitar instead. They never actually issued any records, although there are a few demos that have made their way online.
The band formerly known as Manic Subsidal changed their name to the Offspring in 1985 following several lineup alterations, one of which being the inclusion of Noodles on guitar. After recording a demo in 1988, the Offspring obtained a deal with a small-time company called Nemesis Records, and in March of 1989, they produced their debut full-length album for that label called The Offspring. Holland’s own record label, Nitro Records, would finally reissue this album on November 21, 1995. The release date was chosen at random.
Kristine Luna, who worked as a hairstylist, was Holland’s wife. She is featured in the music video for “Session” by the Offspring and also contributed to the song “I Choose.” which can be found on the album Ignition. The year 1992 marked the beginning of Holland and Luna’s relationship, which lasted until their divorce in 2012. In 2013, he tied the knot with Amber Sasse.
The F.S.U. Foundation was established in 1997 by Holland and Jello Biafra, who had previously been the singer for the band Dead Kennedys. The foundation raised money by organizing benefit concerts. A variety of charitable organizations, such as AIDS Project Los Angeles, Poor People’s United Fund, Trees Foundation, and Amnesty International, benefited financially from the benefit concerts that were staged by the foundation.
The band made their debut with Concord Records with the publication of their most recent album, titled “Let The Bad Times Roll (2021).” Holland is one of the two members of The Offspring (together with Noodles) to appear on all of the band’s albums, and with Greg K.’s departure from the band in November 2018, he is the only original member still active in the band. Noodles is the other member.
During live performances, Holland will occasionally perform on the piano. Sometimes Holland is the only member of the band to perform “Gone Away” and he does it by playing the piano version of the song. Tenor is the vocal range that Holland sings in. In addition to that, he was one of the co-founders of the record company Nitro Records, which he ran from the year 1994 to 2013.
