About Daz Dillinger
Daz began his career around the age of 19 with Death Row Records, which was cofounded by Marion “Suge” Knight. At Death Row Records, Daz learnt music production from Dr. Dre. Daz is the younger cousin of rapper Snoop Dogg, who is also from Long Beach, California. After being signed to the label at the age of 19, Daz collaborated with Dr. Dre on the production of the album The Chronic, which is widely regarded as the seminal effort in West Coast rap.
During this time, they formed a rap duo known as Tha Dogg Pound and became friends with the rapper Kurupt, who also appeared on The Chronic.
Dr. Dre, the head producer for Death Row Records, began to separate himself from the studio’s toxic environment in 1996 as the East–West rap rivalry and Suge Knight‘s violent techniques in house became more intense. Dr. Dre stopped producing full albums for Death Row after the release of Tha Dogg Pound’s debut album, Dogg Food, which Daz was in charge of producing. Dr. Dre eventually worked there only with 2Pac, and on 2Pac’s first Death Row album, All Eyez on Me, he produced only three tracks: “California Love” “California Love (Remix)” and “Can’t C Me” Dr. Dre eventually worked there only with 2Pac.
An exodus of musicians from Death Row Records was sparked by the slaying of 2Pac in September 1996, which resulted in Suge being sentenced to nine years in jail in 1997 for violating the terms of his release.
Between the years 1997 and 1998, Nate Dogg, Snoop, and Kurupt parted ways with Death Row, leaving the label’s only remaining platinum seller to be Tha Dogg Pound member Daz. In the meantime, Daz contributed production to Nate Dogg’s debut studio album, which was released by his own newly formed label, to the only studio album released by the Lady of Rage, as well as to the soundtrack for Gridlock’d.
In 2001, while Death Row was still the owner of the duo’s previous name, Daz and Kurupt reappeared, but this time under the name D.P.G., with a second album titled Dillinger & Young Gotti. However, within a short period of time, Kurupt went back on with Death Row, which prompted Daz to continuously malign him in songs and interviews.
During his beef with Kurupt, which lasted from 2002 until 2005, Daz released a few solo albums, including one with a makeshift group called DPGC, which featured Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, and Bad Azz among its members. In 2005, Snoop held an unification ceremony on the West Coast, when Daz and Kurupt made amends with one another. While Daz was finishing his brief time at Jermaine Dupri‘s So So Def Recordings, Kurupt departed Death Row for the second time in order to get the rights to their original name, which was Tha Dogg Pound. Since then, Tha Dogg Pound has released a few additional albums over the course of the years that have passed.
In the year 2020, Daz collaborated with MC Capone of Queens, who was also one half of the duo Capone-N-Norega, to record an album titled “Guidelines” that was distributed by Empire Distribution.
