About Alex Wolff
In the music video for Fall Out Boy’s song “The Take Over, The Breaks Over” which was released in 2007, he played the role of a little boy. Both the 2009 Nickelodeon television movie Mr. Troop Mom and the 2009 American police procedural and comic television program Monk included guest appearances by Wolff.
In 2010, he also acted as the lead character in his own play, What Would Woody Do?, which was produced at The Flea Theater and directed by his mother. That same year, he also starred in the HBO medical drama In Treatment. After that, Wolff was in the comedic picture The Sitter (2011) and starred in the independent film HairBrained starring Brendan Fraser.
Wolff is the maternal grandson of William Henry Draper III, a venture capitalist and civic leader, the nephew of Tim Draper, himself a venture capitalist, the cousin of actress Jesse Draper, and the great-grandson of banker and diplomat William Henry Draper Jr.
His mother, Polly Draper, was an actress and playwright, and his father, Michael Wolff, was a jazz pianist. He was born in Manhattan, New York City. His older brother, the actor and musician Nat Wolff, is his older sibling. He comes from a Jewish family but his mother adheres to the Christian faith.
Wolff made his debut as an actor in the musical comedy film The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie, which was written and directed by his mother and premiered in 2005 when Wolff was only six years old. It was ordered by Nickelodeon to serve as the premiere episode of the television series The Naked Brothers Band (2007–2009), which his mother also developed, produced, wrote, and directed.
He provided lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation for the movie as well as the series; their father produced and oversaw the music. Two soundtrack CDs were produced for the show, and one of them, titled “Crazy Car” peaked at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 lists.
Wolff received a Broadcast Music, Inc. Cable Award in 2007, the Audience Award for a Family Feature Film at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2005, and he was nominated for a Young Artist Award in both 2008 and 2009. These accolades were all in recognition of Wolff’s work on the series and film adaptation of The Naked Brothers Band.
Coming Through the Rye was an independent drama that he starred in back in 2015. In the year 2016, he appeared in the comedic sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and the dramatic film Patriots Day, which was about the bombing of the Boston Marathon. In Patriots Day, he played the character of the terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Hereditary, a film about the supernatural horror genre that was released in 2018, featured Alex Wolff. In 2019, he made his debut as a director with the film “The Cat and the Moon,” which he also starred in, wrote, and directed.
In the year 2020, Wolff was a reader for the series Acting for a Cause, which was written, directed, and produced by Brando Crawford. The series featured live readings of classic plays and screenplays. Wolff portrayed Algernon in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and Warren Straub in Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth. Both roles were written by Wilde. The proceeds from the reading went to a number of charitable organizations, including Mount Sinai Medical Center. Wolff contributed to the production of the second reading.
The performance he gave in the movie Castle in the Ground earned him a nomination for the Canadian Screen Award in the category of Best Actor, which was presented at the 9th Canadian Screen Awards in 2021.
