About Alec Monopoly
Growing up in New York, Alec Monopoly relocated to Los Angeles in 2006. Due to the city’s numerous billboards and the more upscale nature of New York City’s art community, he discovered that working there was simpler.
He is known for either concealing his face with a hand or a face mask for medical purposes. His claim to fame is his use of “Mr. Monopoly,” a famous character from the Parker Brothers’ classic board game Monopoly (today part of the Hasbro brand).
Monopoly is best known for his graffiti portrayal of Monopoly Man, which was first inspired by stockbroker Bernie Madoff and features him in a tuxedo and top hat.
The artist has also produced works in urban areas such as Miami, Los Angeles, Europe, Mexico, and Asia utilizing a variety of mediums (such as stencils, spray paint, epoxies, varnishes, and newspapers) to portray a wide range of well-known pop culture figures.
He has his first solo gallery exhibition in New York City in November 2010. As part of Art Basel Miami Beach, he participated in an exhibition in December 2010 at the Mondrian Hotel.
He organized a Samsung-sponsored yacht party at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2013. In addition, he painted a mural live on the red carpet for the 2013 movie Justin Bieber‘s Believe as a brand ambassador for the Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer. Famous buyers of Monopoly’s art include Philipp Plein, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Snoop Dogg, Seth Rogen, Adrien Brody, and Iggy Azalea.
In an effort to collect money for the Barstool Fund, which is supporting small businesses as part of a COVID-19 relief effort, Monopoly partnered with the media brand Barstool Sports in 2021 to offer exclusive products.
