About William Hopper
William Hopper, actor DeWolf Hopper’s only child, starred in more than 80 full-length movies in the 1930s and 1940s, mostly in supporting roles. Hopper made his screen debut in his father’s 1916 silent film Sunshine Dad when he was just a baby. His mother came to Hollywood with their son after divorcing his father in 1922. With approximately 30 million readers in American newspapers, Hedda Hopper rose to prominence as one of the most infamous gossip columnists in the country and a leading supporter of the Hollywood blacklist.
He stopped performing after serving in the US Navy during World War II, but William Wellman was able to convince him to start acting again in the middle of the 1950s. His role as private eye Paul Drake in the CBS television series Perry Mason helped him to get the most notoriety.
On February 14, 1970, Hopper, a chain smoker who frequently indulged in Perry Mason, entered Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California, after having a stroke. Three weeks later, on March 6, he passed away at the age of 55 from a heart attack. In Whittier, California’s Rose Hills Memorial Park, he was laid to rest.
