About Vitalik Buterin
Buterin started writing for a publication named Bitcoin Weekly in 2011 with the intention of earning bitcoin after meeting a person on a bitcoin forum and discussing the possibility of doing so. To anyone who would write an article for him, the proprietor promised five bitcoin, which was equivalent to approximately $3.50 at the time.
Buterin contributed writing to the site until shortly thereafter when it was taken down because of low money. Buterin was approached by Mihai Alisie in September 2011 about the possibility of creating a new print newspaper called Bitcoin Magazine. If Buterin were to accept the position, he would become the first co-founder of the publication and contribute to it as a leading writer.
Buterin was born in the Russian city of Kolomna in the year 1994. His father worked in the field of computer science. He spent his first six years of life in that region before moving to Canada with his family in quest of better career possibilities when he was six years old.
When Buterin was in the third grade of primary school in Canada, he was placed in a class for brilliant children, and he found that he was particularly interested in mathematics, programming, and economics.
After tweeting about an economist named Glen Weyl’s idea for a new wealth tax, Buterin was able to initiate communication with Weyl. In 2019, they published a paper together titled “A Flexible Design for Funding Public Goods.” This article was written in collaboration with Zoe Hitzig, a PhD student at Harvard. Using a variant of quadratic voting, the author of this work outlines a procedure for the most efficient delivery of public goods.
It was not until 2012 that Bitcoin Magazine started producing a print edition; it is often cited as the first significant publication entirely devoted to digital currencies like bitcoin and ethereum. Buterin applied for a position at Ripple while he was still working for Bitcoin Magazine, and Jed McCaleb accepted his application. Ripple was unable to sponsor Buterin for a work visa in the United States, which caused their prospective employment arrangement to fall through.
In 2013, he traveled to different nations to meet other software engineers who shared his passion for coding. In the latter part of that year, he went back to Toronto and produced a white paper presenting the Ethereum proposal. When he was given a grant of $100,000 from the Thiel Fellowship in 2014, a fellowship established by venture entrepreneur Peter Thiel, he decided to devote all of his time and energy to working on Ethereum instead of continuing his education at a university.
At the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014, the Ethereum white paper was disseminated, and there was a growing interest in the new protocol. At the North American Bitcoin Conference on the 26th of January in Miami, Buterin made a more public announcement on Ethereum. Buterin gave a speech that lasted for twenty-five minutes during which he discussed the general-purpose global computer that operates on a decentralized permissionless network. He concluded his remarks by discussing some of the potential applications of Ethereum, which included crop insurance, decentralized exchanges, and DAOs.
Buterin had a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 2, 2017, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. At the time, Buterin was beginning to recognize the economic and political relevance of the Ethereum company for his home country of Russia (SPIEF). Putin has been on record as saying that he “supported the idea of establishing ties with possible Russian partners”.
