About Amar’e Stoudemire
When Stoudemire was a rookie, he had a scoring average of 13.5 points and an average of 8.8 rebounds per game. His season high was 38 points, which he scored against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 30, 2002. This was the highest score ever recorded by a prep-to-pro player until LeBron James broke it a year later.
Lake Wales, Florida is a tiny city located approximately one hour outside of Orlando, Florida. Stoudemire was born there. When Stoudemire was a small boy, his parents, Hazell and Carrie (née Palmorn), filed for and received a divorce. They were blessed with two kids as a result of their union: Hazell Jr. and Amar’e. Stoudemire’s mother worked in agriculture, picking oranges in Florida and then moving north to gather apples in upstate New York in the fall. Stoudemire is named after his mother.
When Stoudemire was only 14 years old, he made his debut in organized basketball competition. Stoudemire went to a total of five different high schools across two states during his high school career. This was due to the fact that his mother had legal issues and was frequently moving in and out of their home. In the beginning, he went to high school in Lake Wales, Florida, at Lake Wales High School. However, due to academic ineligibility, his freshman year there was cut short.
Stoudemire finished his collegiate career with career highs in points (29.1), rebounds (15), blocks (6.1) and steals (2.1) per game. Stoudemire was selected to play in the 2002 McDonald’s All-American Game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It was there that he met Carmelo Anthony and Raymond Felton, both of whom would go on to play for the New York Knicks. This was one of the many high school honors that Stoudemire received.
Together with his wife, Alexis Welch, Stoudemire is a father to four kids. After dating each other beginning in 2002, the couple got engaged in May 2012 and then was married a few months later on December 12, 2012, on the rooftop of their Greenwich Village apartment. Stoudemire initially filed for divorce from his wife in October 2018, but the case was eventually thrown out in July 2019 because he did not provide the necessary paperwork to continue with the process.
Stoudemire and the point guard Steve Nash, whom the Suns had acquired as a free agency, collaborated well together to guide the Suns to a 62–20 record during the 2004–2005 season. After posting a season in which he averaged 26 points per game and established a new career best with 50 points scored on January 2, 2005 against the Portland Trail Blazers, he was picked as a reserve forward for the NBA All-Star Game for the first time in 2005.
Stoudemire was selected to play on the United States national team that competed in the Summer Olympics in 2004 and ended up earning the bronze medal. This took place during the summer. In spite of this, head coach Larry Brown chose not to give him a considerable amount of playing time (6.9 minutes per game).
Following the discovery of knee cartilage damage sustained by Stoudemire during the 2005–2006 NBA preseason, the player underwent microfracture surgery on October 18, 2005. The Suns, now led by new head coach Terry Porter, had a difficult start to the 2008–2009 season with his system, and they dropped five straight games leading up to the 2009 All-Star break. Stoudemire was selected to play for the Western Conference’s starting lineup. Stoudemire suffered a detached retina on February 19 while playing for the New York Knicks against the Los Angeles Clippers. However, it is possible that he injured the retina before this game because he had been having issues with the same eye before to this game.
Stoudemire earned a spot on the All-Star team for the second consecutive year during the 2009–2010 campaign. During the course of the season, Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic reported that the Suns and the Cleveland Cavaliers discussed a trade that would have sent Stoudemire to Cleveland to play alongside LeBron James. However, the deal did not go through, and Stoudemire ended up playing for the Suns instead of the Cavaliers.
Stoudemire exercised his right to opt out of his contract with the Phoenix Suns on June 30, 2010, which resulted in him becoming a free agent without any restrictions. On July 5, 2010, an agreement in principle was reached between Stoudemire and the New York Knicks over a contract that was expected to be worth approximately $99.7 million over the course of five years. At Madison Square Garden, on the very first day that free agents were permitted to officially sign contracts with teams, the Knicks made Stoudemire’s introduction to the public.
During his appearance on ESPN First Take in October 2011, Stoudemire introduced the Nike Air Max Sweep Thru footwear line that he had recently launched. Stoudemire attended Florida International University, where he worked out and attended history classes while the NBA was locked out. In addition to that, he tried his hand at acting and made a guest appearance in the episode of Entourage titled “Second to Last”.
On January 1, 2013, at home against Portland, Stoudemire made his first appearance of the season. He came off the bench and played 17 minutes, during which he scored six points and grabbed one rebound. Following his return, Stoudemire was only allowed to participate in games for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time.
After spending most of the 2013–14 season on the Knicks’ bench, Stoudemire started the 2014–15 season in a similar situation, and he continued to put up strong numbers despite missing only one game over the first 28 of the season’s contests. Up until the game against Chicago on December 18, he averaged 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest, which enabled him to emerge as a strong leader off the bench for a young Knicks team that had only won five games by the middle of December. In addition, he scored an average of 13.4 points per game.
Stoudemire joined the Dallas Mavericks after signing a contract with the team on February 18, 2015. He made his debut with the Mavericks four days later, when they played the Charlotte Hornets. Coming off the bench, he scored 14 points in just 11 minutes. Stoudemire finished his time with the Mavericks having played in a total of 23 games and averaging 10.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest.
Stoudemire did not retire from playing basketball after leaving the NBA, and on August 1, 2016, he signed a two-year deal with Hapoel Jerusalem, a team he co-owns that competes in the Israeli Basketball Premier League. Despite retiring from the NBA, Stoudemire continued to play basketball.
The Israeli Basketball League Cup was won by Hapoel Jerusalem thanks to his contributions on October 1, 2016. Stoudemire inked a contract to play with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association on the 30th of October, 2019
He was a member of the Sturgeons and participated in 11 games, averaging 19.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. Midway through the month of December in 2019, Stoudemire parted ways with the squad and headed back to the United States.
Stoudemire was hired by the Brooklyn Nets on the 30th day of October, 2020, in the position of player development assistant. He made the announcement on May 12, 2022, that he will not be returning to the Nets for the 2022–23 season of basketball.
