Holmes is the younger of two children and was born in West Memphis, Arkansas. He is also the youngest of the two siblings. The nickname “T. Jr.” was given to him by his family. When he first began his career in television, he did not start going by the name “T. J.” until much later. Both the National Association of Black Journalists and the 100 Black Men of Atlanta are organizations in which Holmes participates.

In addition to that, he is a member of the Chancellor’s Board of Advisors at the University of Arkansas as well as the Board of Visitors at Emory University in Atlanta. Holmes received his degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Arkansas, where he also received his education.

Since the 29th of December in 2012, Holmes has filled in as an anchor for the network MSNBC on a number of occasions. Both Weekends with Alex Witt and NewsNation with Tamron Hall have included him as a guest host. Holmes made a momentary return to the Turner family of networks beginning on June 24, 2013, when he began anchoring coverage of the George Zimmerman trial. This return lasted for around one week.

It was announced on December 23, 2014 that he would be staying on with World News Now in a permanent capacity.
