About Nik Richie
In March of 2007, while based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Richie launched TheDirty.com under the name DirtyScottsdale.com. At first, Richie’s critiques of Scottsdale’s nightlife and other aspects of the city were the primary emphasis of content on Dirtyscottsdale.com. TheDirty.com’s updated and more well-known version lets users anonymously post their own “dirt” such as news, gossip, accusations, pictures, videos, or text, and comment on the submissions of others.
Richie was born in the New Jersey city of Hackensack. He started out as a credit card processor before moving into the online industry. Dancing in September (2000), Couples Therapy (2012), and David Tutera: Unveiled (2000) are probably his most well-known works (2013).
Richie is a seasoned marital veteran, having gone through two successful unions. Their 2005 wedding to Amanda Toney resulted in a 2009 divorce. At a later time, he tied the knot with Shayne Lamas.
Until his arrest in Scottsdale for DUI and dangerous driving on September 4, 2008, Richie ran TheDirty.com under an alias.
Once word of Richie’s arrest spread, he “outed” himself in public. The Arizona Republic interviewed Richie in January 2009 after he was named one of the state’s “10 most fascinating people” ranking just below political commentator Meghan McCain and author Stephenie Meyer.
In an episode of Dr. Phil titled “Dirt, Lies and the Internet.” from November of 2010, Richie was interviewed by Phil McGraw to discuss the topic of cyberbullying and gossip.
He tied the knot with Shayne Lamas on April 18, 2010, thus it was already a significant year. That’s right, there’s only one little one in the family. The actress Amanda Toney was his ex-wife.
Sarah Jones, a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader and high school teacher who was suing Richie for defamation at the time, challenged him during an interview with talk show host Anderson Cooper in November 2011.
A report about Richie’s court case against Sarah Jones appeared on the ABC News program 20/20 that year. Richie and his wife were among the many couples featured on Season 2 of the VH1 reality show Couples Therapy, which aired in the fall of 2012.
Richie and Lamas renewed their wedding vows on television in the season finale. Richie’s autobiography, Sex, Lies, and the Dirty, came out in May of 2013. In a 2014 episode of Couples Therapy, Richie and Lamas made their return to the show as a couple. By 2015, Richie had already been given a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Nik and Shayne announced their impending divorce on Instagram on May 10, 2021, after 11 years of marriage.
Once upon a time in 2016, Richie shifted TheDirty.com from its former “gossip” structure to that of a more traditional celebrity news website. March 2019 Instagram post from Richie announced his “retirement” from TheDirty.com, presumably in reference to his departure from the site in April 2018.
