About Lorde
Lorde’s father was a civil engineer and her mother a poet. It is said that her mother’s poetry was a source of inspiration for the young Ella (Lorde) growing up. Raised mostly by her mother, Lorde Bega singing at an early age and was performing songs that she had written by 12 and at various talent shows linked to her school and local area. She was soon discovered by a record company representative and offered a recording contract.
When she was 13 she was signed to an artist development contract with Universal. She was provided with time, equipment and specialists that helped her develop her vocals while she continued to write her own songs mostly in private. It was her singing that Universal wanted to develop as Lorde does not play an instrument and depended on her singing voice. She later worked with New Zealand songwriter and producer Joel Little, the lead singer of the punk pop pand Goodnight Nurse. In November 2012, Lorde released her debut EP The Love Club for free online to build an initial fanbase. The track “Royals” from the EP went to number 1 on the New Zealand pop singles chart in March 2013. It also earned her the APRA Silver Scroll Award and two Grammy Awards for “Best Pop Solo Performance” and “Song of the Year”. Out of nowhere, the New Zealand singer-songwriter had resonated with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Jack White who recorded cover tracks. Lorde was antithesis to the bright pop sound of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, offering a darker melody. Pure Heroine, was a major hit in the US as well as in the UK and New Zealand.
