About Larry the Cable Guy

Known as Larry the Cable Guy, Daniel Lawrence Whitney, really became famous for his “Git ‘r done!” call. Then with his fame through the Blue Collar Comedy Tour where, like Jeff Foxworthy has also done, he discovered his variety of “redneck” comedy. It’s a character that the comedian Dan Whitney calls the “Cable Guy”. With a career spanning over 30 years now, he is one of the most successful comedians of all time.

American stand-up comedian Joan Armatrading has an estimated net worth of $100 million dollars, as of 2023. Larry earns millions in endorsements from all kinds of products, including heartburn medication.

While Larry has been an incredibly successful comedian, he has likely earned far more through his various endorsements. Some estimate that Larry can earn as much as $20 million per year through various endorsements alone. When adding his touring earnings into the mix, it’s estimated that Larry the Cable Guy has earned as much as $70 million dollars in one calendar year.

Dan Whitney (Larry the Cable Guy) was born and raised in Pawnee, Nebraska. Having been enraptured by comedy acts at an early age, in 1985, he started out by performing bits at comedy club amateur nights in West Palm Beach, Florida. It takes years to develop comedic timing, let alone the confidence to perform an act, Whitney invested his efforts young and didn’t mind looking stupid short term to win long term. In 1991, Whitney became a regular radio caller on several popular shows across the country. He began developing various different comedic characters over the phone.

What many people don’t see, is the sheer time and effort that comedians put in behind closed doors. In fact, many comedians didn’t start out being totally funny, but rather understood the mechanics of how to make a joke. The setting it up and the surprise that triggers laughter.

Throughout the ’90s, Whitney was still putting his bits together, coming up with new characters and stringing together acts. He also earned extra money as a radio DJ and continued to be a popular phone performer on other shows. It was during this time that he developed his “Larry the Cable Guy” character. He could never have expected it to have turned out to become as big as it eventually did. But that’s the thing, and it’s the same in business, a person is expected to try out about 17 different ventures until one proves successful. In 2000, Larry the Cable Guy joined the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, quickly becoming a hugely popular stand-up.

He released his first album in 2001. By 2005, Larry was publishing his first book, called Git ‘R Done. In 2006, Larry starred in his first feature film: Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector. While the film was not a success and received mostly negative review it still had an audience and broke him in to that side of the entertainment business. While working as a comic, often the comic will work alone, spending lots of time alone developing material. In the movie business, that is akin to the screenplay writers, but as an actor, and especially in a supporting role, one really needs to mix in. In 2009, he was the guest of honor at the Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy.

In June 2012, Disneyland’s California Adventure theme park’s “Cars Land” features a ride called “Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree” it uses Whitney’s voice as the character Mater from the Disney/Pixar Cars movies.

Larry the Cable Guy Discography: Lord, I Apologize (CD) (2001), A Very Larry Christmas (CD) (2004), Git-R-Done (DVD) (2004), The Right Bare Arms (2005), Morning Constitutions (2007), Christmas in Larryland (2007), Larry the Cable Guy’s Christmas Spectacular (DVD) (2007), Larry the Cable Guy’s Star-Studded Christmas Extravaganza (DVD) (2008), Tailgate Party (CD) (2009), The Best of Larry the Cable Guy (2010), Them Idiots: Whirled Tour (2012) and We’ve Been Thinking (with Jeff Foxworthy) (2017).

Larry the Cable Guy provided the voice of “Mater” in the animated Pixar film Cars in 2006. His 2005 album The Right to Bare Arms debuted at number one on both the comedy and country charts, marking the first time a comedy album topped the country charts.

The Right to Bare Arms also received a Grammy nomination for Comedy Album of the Year.

In 2005, Larry the Cable Guy received Billboard’s Comedy Artist of the Year and Comedy Album of the Year. In 2006, he received Billboard’s Top Comedy Tour of the Year award.
