Jorge Masvidal is an American professional mixed martial artist whose professional career began in 2003. Since then, he has been competing for multiple events held by Bellator, Strikeforce, Shark Fights, and World Victory Roads. As of now, he is part of the welterweight division for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). At five seconds, he holds the record for fastest knockout in UFC history and is the organization’s former BMF Champion.
Jorge Masvidal became famous when his professional boxing career began. He was born on November 12, 1984, in Miami, Florida. He’s the son of a Cuban father and a Peruvian mother. His father left Cuba during the 1960s but was later imprisoned for more than twenty years for manslaughter and drug trafficking. From a young age, Jorge was involved in many street fights and attended multiple competitions and contests.

In the 1990s, while attending the St. Brendan High School, he began wrestling. One of his earliest fights was against Ray, the protege of Kimbo Slice whom he defeated. Unfortunately for the MMA fighter, his wrestling time in St. Brendan High School was relatively short as he failed to stay eligible because of his mixed grades. He then focused his attention to karate and mixed martial arts and began training across the Florida area with various specialists. By the time he graduated from high school, he was already starting his professional career.
Being part of the American Top Team and competing in Bellator, Strikeforce, and other well-known MMA and kickboxing organizations is what made Masvidal so rich. In May 2003, Jorge began his professional career. In his mixed martial arts debut, he defeated Brandon Bledsoe via knockout in just three minutes. The following month, he competed in the main event of the AFC (Absolute Fighting Championships) event XII, in which he defeated Joe Lauzon via technical knockout.
Just after he garnered a 3-0 record, Jorge was signed by Bellator. In 2009, he entered their lightweight tournament where he made it to the semi-finals. Eventually, he was eliminated from the tournament by Toby Imada at Bellator 5, which marked his first loss.
By the following year, things didn’t work out between the two sides and he was released by the organization. He then returned to Strikeforce where he racked up victories over the likes of Billy Evangelista, KJ Noons, and Justin Wilcox. Following the dissolution of Strikeforce the following year, Miasvidal was moved over to the UFC.
After losing to Stephen Thompson in November 2017 at UFC 217, Jorge Masvidal went on a hiatus that lasted well over one year. Following his layoff that lasted six months, he made his return in March 2019 against Darren Till in the main event of UFC Fight Night 147. Masvidal won his return match and also earned his second “Fight of the Night” and third “Performance of the Night” bonus awards.
