About Jhene Aiko
Jhene Aiko, whose full name is Jhene Aiko Efuru Chilombo, is an American singer and songwriter. She embarked on her music career in the early 2000s while contributing vocals to and appearing in the music videos of the R&B group B2K. In 2003, her debut studio album was supposed to be released, however, she decided to drop out of the labels Sony, Epic, and The Ultimate Group so that she could continue her education. Eventually, she returned to music in 2011 and since then has released three studio albums and many other commercially acclaimed projects.
How did Jhene Aiko earn her net worth?
The talented R&B superstar became rich when she signed a recording deal with the record producer No I.D.’s record label called “ARTium”. In 2002, she released her debut single “No L.O.V.E”, which was supposed to be the lead single of her debut studio album “My Name is Jhene”. The album was never released as the artist decided to continue her education before focusing on music. In March 2011, she returned to music and released her debut studio project – the mixtape “.sailing soul(s)..” from which she earned a little over $20.000 in total.
Signing with the label ARTium, which is distributed through Def Jam Recordings helped Aiko find a ton of success in the music industry. In September 2014, she released her debut studio album called “Souled Out”. The album was included in many international charts in countries such as Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, where it also sold thousands of copies. To further promote her debut album, towards the end of the year, she embarked on her first national tour – “Enter the Void Tour”, thanks to which she received more than $50.000.
Why is she so famous?
Jhene Aiko first gained national popularity when she associated herself with B2K. She was dubbed the cousin of Lil Fizz (one of B2K’s members) even though she didn’t have a personal connection to him. She was born on March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles, California. Their home burned down so she had to be homeschooled until high school. She has an older sister, Mila J, who is also a well-known R&B singer. During her late teen years, Jhene took vocal lessons in Culver City, which she quit she unexpectedly got pregnant. At the age of 20, she gave birth to her baby girl Namiko Love Browner.
In 2002, just a few years before these events took place, she embarked on her musical career. At first, she contributed her vocals to the group B2K. She was signed by the labels Sony, Epic Records, and The Ultimate Group. While lending her vocals and songwriting skills, Aiko was known as the B2K rapper Lil Fizz’s cousin, although she is not actually related to him in any way. Instead, this moniker was used to help her attract an audience for her and B2K.
What makes her so successful?
What makes the singer and songwriter so successful are her highly-praised music projects. Since her return to music, Jhene has been proactively releasing new music. Her sophomore album called “Trip” was released in September 2017. It was just as successful as her first and even earned a gold certification by the RIAA for selling 1 million copies. A few years later, in March 2020, she released her third album “Chilombo”, which was a huge hit in international music charts.
Besides her own projects, another thing that has helped the R&B artist find success in the past decade or so has been her collaborations with other artists. In April 2016, she released her first collaborative album with Big Sean called “Twenty88”. The project was a commercial success that topped several US Billboard charts and, by the end of the year, already sold more than one million copies worldwide. Apart from Big Sean, she has created smash hits with the likes of Childish Gambino, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, H.E.R, Sean Paul, and most recently with Saweetie.
Jhene Aiko is the true definition of an R&B superstar. She began her career in the early 2000s and quickly gained popularity with her gentle and pop-tingled vocals, as well as her sensually sweet voice that easily stands out. After a short hiatus, she returned to the music industry, and, ever since then has released three critically and commercially acclaimed studio albums, singles, and mixtapes.
