About Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne started out as the youngest rapper ever signed to Cash Money Records. You’ve heard his hits like “Let It Rock” and “Got Money” in all of the hottest clubs. His real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. and he is recognized as one of the greatest rappers of all time. However, despite his fame and fortune today, he had to go through hard times before he hit worldwide fame and international renown. Here’s how Lil Wayne became recognized as one of the most influential hip hop artists of all time.

Lil Wayne went through many hardships in his youth, his path to stardom was beset with difficulties. His parents divorced when he was still very young, and his father abandoned him and his mother. Wayne has said that, although his father is still alive, he considers his step father to be his real dad. Unfortunately his step father, Reginald McDonald, also known by the nickname Rabbit, was murdered before Wayne became famous.

American rapper, singer, songwriter, record executive, entrepreneur, and actor Lil Wayne has an estimated net worth of $125 million dollars, as of 2023. Lil Wayne hooked up with Birdman in 1991 and kickstarted a rap career so legendary that he is often cited as the greatest hip hop artist.

Wayne met Birdman, a rapper and record executive whose real name is Bryce Williams, in 1991, when he was nine years old. He recorded freestyle raps on Bryce’s answering machine, having written his first rap song at the age of eight. Bryce began to mentor Wayne, helping him and including him in songs by his record label, Cash Money Records.

Lil Wayne joined a group of other rappers at age fourteen, making him the youngest member. The group, called the Hot Boys, achieved success on the Billboard charts, and Wayne began to attract plenty of attention in the hip-hop community.

Wayne released his debut studio solo album when he was seventeen years old. The album, titled Tha Block Is Hot, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, and he earned a magazine nomination for “Best New Artist” because of it.

While his next album, called Lights Out, failed to achieve the success his debut was met by, it didn’t matter, he was already famous. And while some of his earlier work was met with criticism some apparently saying that he wasn’t as “mentally developed” at that time as some of the other members of the Hot Boys. Lil Wayne is a natural born killer and persisted through all, only developing his mind further, and his lyrics, which would blow people away in the years to come.

Despite the time he spent in prison, it seemed to only add to his character and his resolve. His rapping style was improved by the time he got out and his career eventually flourish.

Lil Wayne is know for his collaborations like his colabs with Usher, Akon, T-Pain, Wyclef, and Enrique. He has also collaborated with British Youtube sensation KSI which has added to his fame abroad, especially in the UK.

Smart Kid, Stupid Move

Born in the heart of New Orleans, Lil Wayne’s school report card reflected a student with a strong academic aptitude. But Lil Wayne felt that he could only express his intellect and potential through music. His true meaning. At age 11, he started writing lyrics and rhymes and when introduced to higher-ups at Cash Money Records, he convinced them to give him a job doing odds and ends around the office.

A year later, the label was looking to add talent to the sound of a 14-year-old rapper B.G. 12-year-old Lil Wayne was quickly added to the mix and the two became the B.G.’z (short for Baby Gangstaz). The pair released their first album, True Story, in 1995 and were looking to release their second by 1997 when Lil Wayne, still just 12, shot himself in the chest with a Taurus 9 mm handgun, miraculously missing all vital organs. Although he survived, B.G. released the album solo.

While many thought it was just an accident, in Lil Wayne’s 2018 album Tha Carter V, he raps about suicide…

“I found my mama’s pistol where she always hide it / I cry, put it to my head and thought about it / Nobody was home to stop me, so I called my auntie / Hung up, then put the gun up to my heart and pondered / Too much was on my conscience to be smart about it / Too torn apart about it, I aim where my heart was pounding / I shot it, and I woke up with blood all around me / It’s mine, I didn’t die, but as I was dying / God came to my side, and we talked about it / He sold me another life, and he made a prophet.” — Lil Wayne, Tha Carter V, 2018

Flying Solo

That same year, he dropped the “D” from his first name and officially became Lil Wayne. Once again collaborating with B.G. he joined the group Hot Boys, which also included Young Turk and Juvenile. The foursome released their first album, Get It How You Live!, in 1997. Two years later the boys signed a distribution deal with Universal Records who got their second album, Guerilla Warfare, to Billboard number one status.

But it wasn’t long before Lil Wayne ditched the group and began making moves on his own. The 17-year-old’s first album, Tha Block is Hot, went two times platinum and skyrocketed to number three on the Billboard album chart. From the numbers, it seemed as though Lil Wayne had finally made it but middle America had still never heard of the dirty south rapper. His second album and third albums didn’t replicate the success of his first, but his 2004 album, Tha Carter, sold more than one million copies and landed Lil Wayne major recognition within the industry.

Artists like Destiny’s Child and T.I. began calling the rapper to collaborate. Following the success of the Tha Carter, Tha Carter II was released in 2005 and shared the same success as the first installment. That same year, Lil Wayne was named president of Cash Money Records and also founded Young Money Entertainment; although, two years later, he would step down from leadership at both companies.

Lil Wayne, now a star and prolific rapper, went on to release Tha Carter III (2008) and Rebirth (2010). As wel as collaborate with the likes of Usher, Akon, Keri Hilson and Kevin Rudolf and produce club anthems like “Lollipop” and “Got Money.”

Locked Up

But, even with his success, Lil Wayne wasn’t able to stay out of trouble. In 2007, following one of his headlining concerts in New York, he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. A .40-caliber pistol was found on his tour bus. The gun allegedly did not belong to Lil Wayne, according to his attorney. He ended up accepted a plea agreement and was sentenced to a year in prison.

His sentence started on February 2010. However his sentence was reduced to eight months for good behavior and he was released in November 2010.

Baby Mamas +4

Behind bars and down on his luck, his fans weren’t the only ones missing the young rapper.

His son Dwayne III, was born in 2008. His mother was a nail technician, and in 2009, Lil Wayne notoriously impregnated two women at the same time—model Lauren London and singer Nivea. London gave birth to a son in September 2009 and Nivea gave Lil Wayne a third son a little less than two months later.

In 2010, while still in prison, Lil Wayne made a daring comeback with his album, I Am Not a Human Being, which brought him another number one hit with “Human”. With that, he lived up to the album’s title, proving that despite his fair share of mistakes, Lil Wayne is beyond human.

Lil Wayne is the proud father of four children. His first child, a daughter Reginae, was born when he was only 15 to his childhood sweetheart and ex-wife Antonia Carter.

Most of his fortune comes from his rap albums most notably Tha Carter III. Certified triple platinum by the RIAA, in 2009 Tha Carter III also won the Best Rap Album award at the Grammy Awards. In 2005 Lil Wayne founded Young Money Entertainment which diversified his income making him not just a rapper but also a producer and an entrepreneur. Through the label, Lil Wayne’s net worth grew by leaps and bounds even blasting past Birdman’s net worth.

His total number of record sales worldwide may be as high as 125 million including more than 20 million albums and 70 million digital tracks.
