About Griselda Blanco
Blanco was involved in the drug-related violence that afflicted Miami in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This violence was known as the Miami Drug War or the Cocaine Cowboy Wars. Blanco was a participant in these wars. At this point in time, more cocaine than cannabis was being traded on the black market.
She entered the United States without authorization in the middle of the 1970s using forged passport documents, and she eventually lived in Queens, New York. She created a significant cocaine operation there, and in April 1975, she was indicted on federal narcotics conspiracy charges along with thirty of her subordinates. These allegations were brought about because she was a part of a far larger drug ring. She escaped to Colombia just in time to avoid being jailed, but in the late 1980s she traveled back to the United States and eventually settled in Miami.
Cartagena, which is located on Colombia’s northern coast, is where Griselda Blanco Restrepo was born. When she was just three years old, she and her mother, Ana Blanco, uprooted their lives and relocated to Medelln. After getting there, she immediately started living a criminal lifestyle. Blanco’s ex-lover, Charles Cosby, related that when Blanco was 11 years old, she allegedly kidnapped a child from an elite flatland community next to her own neighborhood, attempted to hold the child for ransom, and ultimately shot the youngster.
Blanco was already working as a pickpocket before she turned 13 years old. At the age of 19, she ran away from home to get away from the sexual assaults that were being committed by her mother’s boyfriend, and she lived as a vagrant in Medelln until she was 20 years old.
Her return to the United States occurred at the same time as the early part of a very public violent conflicts that involved hundreds of murders and killings annually. These conflicts were associated with the high crime epidemic that swept through the City of Miami in the 1980s.
Her return to the United States coincided with this epidemic. CENTAC 26, also known as the Central Tactical Unit, is an anti-drug operation that is a joint operation between the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This anti-drug operation was established as a result of the struggle that law enforcement had to put an end to the flow of cocaine into Miami. Her distribution network, which included locations all across the United States, brought in an average of $80 million each month.
Blanco was taken into custody by agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) at her residence on February 17, 1985. She was later charged with participating in a conspiracy to produce, import, and distribute cocaine. She was found guilty after the matter was tried in a federal court in New York City, and she was given a sentence of 15 years in prison as a result.
She was charged with three charges of first-degree murder by the state of Florida while she was already behind bars serving her original term. The prosecution struck a bargain with Jorge Ayala, one of Blanco’s most loyal hitmen, and he agreed to testify against Blanco. In spite of this, the case was thrown out owing to procedural issues that were connected to a phone sex scandal that occurred between Ayala and two female secretaries who worked in the office of the state attorney.
In 1998, Blanco entered a guilty plea and was consequently given a sentence of twenty years in jail. Blanco had a heart attack while she was incarcerated in the year 2002. In 2004, she was freed and deported back to Medelln.
On the evening of September 3, 2012, Blanco made a purchase at the Cardiso butcher shop located on the corner of 29th Street in Medellin for a total of $150 worth of meat. She was shot in the head and the shoulder by a motorcycle who entered the business and carried out her murder when she was 69 years old.
