Gloria Frances Stuart was an American actress, activist, and visual artist who lived from July 4, 1910, until September 26, 2010. Her estimated net worth was $8 million. She also co-starred with Shirley Temple in Poor Little Rich Girl (1936) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1936), two movies she made for director John Ford: Air Mail (1932) and The Prisoner of Shark Island (1926). Clips from her films with Temple, those directed by James Whale, as well as Roman Scandals (1935), Gold Diggers of 1935, The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936), Island in the Sky (1938), My Favorite Year (1982), and Titanic were displayed during the homage (1997). Various Careers
In 1933, the politically engaged Stuart joined the newly established Screen Actors Guild and served on its national board. She started to pursue her passion in the arts in the 1940s when her film employment dried up. She opened a store called Decor, Ltd. where she sold things that she had manufactured by using decoupage, painting, and book-making. Stuart’s third career started when she attained the status of bonsai expert.

Return to the Films
In the 1970s, Stuart started acting once more. She was the only cast member who was still alive when the actual disaster occurred when she filmed Titanic in 1997, making her the oldest nominee for an Academy Award.
Stuart was a funny guest at the AMPAS event and was interviewed on stage by Leonard Maltin. She related a moment from the Titanic movie where she finally lost her cool after sitting in full makeup for almost 12 hours for a scene to be shot.
Stuart’s final acting role was in the Wim Wenders movie Land of Plenty from 2004.
Individual Life
Stuart was married twice, first to the sculptor Blair Gordon Newell from 1930 to 1934 and then to writer/actor Arthur Sheekman for 44 years (1934–1978). She originally met printer Ward Ritchie in 1930 through her first husband, and they reconnected in 1983. Ritchie and Stuart cohabited until his passing in 1996. A Motivation
Stuart is still a source of inspiration at more than 100. She published I Just Kept Hoping, her autobiography, in 1999. She claims that when she graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1927, she was named The Girl Most Likely to Succeed. I didn’t expect it would take so long, Stuart says.
