About Wolfman Jack
Robert Weston Smith, known as Wolfman Jack (January 21, 1938 – July 1, 1995), was an American disc jockey with an estimated net worth of $1 million. Known for his hip patter, trademark howl, and raspy voice he was popular in the sixties and seventies. He associated mainly with rock and roll, and as a result often participated in film and TV projects associated with it (both on and off-camera, usually as a DJ or announcer), including American Graffiti. He hosted the variety series The Midnight Special (1972-1981) and later voiced versions of himself in cartoons (including his own series Wolf Rock TV).
Wolfman grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He and his wife had two children. He died of a heart attack in 1995 after finishing a radio show and promoting his autobiography. Wolfman Jack came to national prominence in a unique way. In the 1960s and 70s, most nationally-known DJs worked for powerhouse stations in the country’s biggest radio markets.
Wolfman Jack’s love of music led him to follow many of the popular radio announcers while he was still a young boy. After graduating from a broadcasting school, he worked for stations in Virginia and Louisiana. While in Louisiana, he began to develop his on-air personality. By 1963, he started broadcasting from the Mexico stations, and for a time managed a station in Minnesota. Eventually, he sold copies of his radio program in syndication. Wolfman Jack worked in Los Angeles before jumping to New York City.
On July 1, 1995, Smith died from a heart attack at his house in Belvidere, North Carolina, shortly after finishing a weekly broadcast. At the time of his death in 1995, Wolfman Jack’s net worth was $1 million. He is buried at a family cemetery in Belvidere.
