About George Hill
American professional basketball player George Jesse Hill Jr., plays for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He won numerous awards while competing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), including Player of the Year in the Summit League and honorable mention All-American his junior year.
Hill was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was inspired by NBA stars like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird. When asked about his hope of being selected in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft, Hill replied, “It’s my boyhood dream.”
Hill was raised as an only child, went to Broad Ripple High School, and thrived there as one of the state’s top high school athletes and one of the “Magnificent Seven” from Indianapolis (with Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Jr., Josh McRoberts, Rodney Carney, Eric Gordon, and Courtney Lee).
Carney recalls facing Hill in a game: “I was thinking, “Who is this little dude?” when I saw him come in and hit all kinds of 3s. …when I saw this little skinny child handling the ball and shooting like that, I knew he was going to be something.”
With the exception of Gordon, who was still healing from a broken wrist at the time of their meeting, Hill faced off against each of the Magnificent Seven. He recalls playing pickup games against Gordon, then 10, when he was 13 years old. He also recalls competing against Oden and Conley during his junior year of high school.
Hill’s 36.2 point per game average during his senior season was the fifth-highest single-season average in Indiana High School Athletic Association annals.
Hill was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the number 26 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He played for the franchise for three seasons before being transferred to the Indiana Pacers in June 2011.
Hill re-signed with the Pacers on July 13, 2012, reportedly to a five-year, $40 million deal.
On July 10, 2017, Hill agreed to a three-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, reportedly worth $57 million.
With only $1 million guaranteed for the 2019–20 season, the pact included two seasons with full guarantees.
He played for Indiana for five seasons until being traded to the Utah Jazz in July 2016. Hill joined the Sacramento Kings as a free agent in July 2017, however in February 2018, he was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He went to the NBA Finals for the first time with the Cavaliers. Hill was dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks in December 2018. He was moved to the Oklahoma City Thunder in November 2020, however in March 2021, he was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers. In August of the same year, Hill joined the Bucks once more as a free agent.
Hill signed a 2-year, $8 million contract to join the Milwaukee Bucks on August 6, 2021.
Hill was sidelined indefinitely after suffering an abdominal strain on April 8, 2022, during a game against the Detroit Pistons. On May 7, Hill rejoined Milwaukee’s rotation and played 11 minutes in Game 3 of Milwaukee’s 103-101 victory over the Boston Celtics.
