Deschanel made her debut in the film industry in 1994 with the romantic comedy-drama It Could Happen to You, which was directed by her father, who also served as the film’s main cinematographer. Her next noteworthy performance came in 2002, when she played Pam Asbury in the Stephen King horror miniseries Rose Red. After that, she had roles in films such as Cold Mountain, The Alamo, and Glory Road, and she was recognized by Interview magazine as one of “six actresses to watch” in the year 2004.
Deschanel was born in Los Angeles, California, to filmmaker and director Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel (née Weir). Her father was a cinematographer, while her mother was an actress. Zooey Deschanel, who is both an actress and a singer-songwriter, is her younger sister. Her French grandparents on her father’s side hailed from Oullins in the Rhône region, but she also has Swiss, Dutch, English, Irish, and additional French ancestry in her family tree.

In February of 2019, an arbitrator decided in their favor and awarded them a total of $179 million. Of this total, $128 million was determined to be punitive damages, $32 million was determined to be compensatory damages, $10 million was determined to be prejudgment interest, and more than $9 million was determined to be fees and costs. The punitive damages were declared invalid in May 2019 by the Los Angeles Superior Court, and the counsel for the plaintiffs stated that they would appeal the decision. In September of 2019, the parties were able to reach an agreement that is being kept confidential.
