About Cybill Shepherd

Shepherd worked with director Peter Bogdanovich in 1974 to play the title character in Daisy Miller, which was adapted from a novella written by Henry James. The movie, which was a period piece that took place in Europe, was not successful at the box office. In the same year, she began her career as a singer by releasing her debut studio album under the label MCA Records titled Cybill Does It…To Cole Porter. Robert Christgau, a critic for the Village Voice, did not like it at all.

Cybill Shepherd has an estimated net worth of $45 million dollars, as of 2023. Her first significant television performance was as Colleen Champion in the single season of the period drama The Yellow Rose (1983).

Shepherd was born on February 18, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee the daughter of Patty (née Shobe), a housewife, and William Jennings Shepherd, who operated a home appliance business. Shepherd’s paternal grandmother was a homemaker as well.

She is the middle child out of the three total. Shepherd claims in her autobiography that Peter Bogdanovich became interested in her after seeing her on the cover of Glamour magazine in the year 1970. His ex-wife Polly Platt asserted this when she saw the cover of the magazine while waiting in line at the checkout counter of a Ralphs supermarket in southern California.

Her first role in a movie was as Jacy Farrow, which she played alongside Jeff Bridges in Peter Bogdanovich’s coming-of-age drama The Last Picture Show (1971). This was her breakout performance. She also played the character of Kelly in Elaine May’s film The Heartbreak Kid (1972), Betsy in Martin Scorsese‘s film Taxi Driver (1976), and Nancy in Woody Allen‘s film Alice. All three of these films were released in the 1970s (1990).

In 1975, she had a role in the musical At Long Last Love, which was directed by Bogdanovich but, similar to Daisy Miller, was a failure at the box office. Shepherd came back to positive feedback for her performance in the film Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese (1976). Shepherd claims that Scorsese expressed interest in casting someone who was a “Cybill Shepherd type” for the part. She played the part of an ethereal beauty who Robert De Niro‘s character, Travis Bickle, fell in love with.

Shepherd made her way back to New York and the stage in 1982, performing alongside James MacArthur in a touring production of Jean Kerr’s play Lunch Hour. The piece was written by Kerr. Shepherd moved back to Los Angeles the following year and was cast as Colleen Champion in the night-time thriller The Yellow Rose (1983), starring opposite Sam Elliott.

Shepherd’s autobiography, Cybill Disobedience: How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think, was published in the year 2000. The book was co-written by Shepherd and Aimee Lee Ball.

Shepherd made her debut on The L Word in 2007 and continued to play the role of Phyllis Kroll throughout the program is last three seasons before it was canceled. In 2008, she became a member of the cast of Psych, in which she played the role of Madeleine Spencer, Shawn Spencer’s mother. Shepherd made a cameo appearance on the February 7 episode of the CBS program Criminal Minds. This episode aired on November 7, 2008.

Shepherd had a guest starring role in an episode of No Ordinary Family in November of the same year that she appeared in an episode of $*! My Dad Says in 2010. Shepherd made her debut on Broadway in the revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in July 2012 to excellent reviews. She co-starred in the production with James Earl Jones, John Stamos, John Larroquette, Kristin Davis, and Elizabeth Ashley.

Shepherd and the psychologist Andrei Nikolajevic announced their engagement in June of 2012. By the year 2015, the engagement was no longer going on. Throughout her career, Shepherd has been a vocal advocate for a variety of causes, including homosexual rights and the right to have an abortion.

In 2009, the Human Rights Campaign held its annual conference in Atlanta, where it presented her with one of two National Ally for Equality awards. She is a supporter of marriage between people of the same gender.

Shepherd announced in October 2014 that she has reestablished her relationship with her Christian faith. Do You Believe? (2015) is a film with a Christian message that was produced by Pure Flix Entertainment. Shepherd played the role of a mother who was grieving the loss of her daughter in the film.

Shepherd had a starring role in the 2023 film How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story, which was produced by Lifetime. In this adaptation of the murder of Daniel Brophy, she played the role of Nancy Brophy, and Steve Guttenberg played the role of Daniel Brophy.
