About Chaz Bono
In 2012, Bono had already been actively pursuing his longstanding ambition of becoming a professional actor. He has appeared in the movies “Dirty,” “Reborn,” “Three From Hell,” and “Reboot Camp” as a guest star. And Bono has been in many episodes of shows including The Bold and the Beautiful, Where the Bears Are, American Horror Story: Roanoke, American Horror Story: Cult, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
As a child, he became famous for appearing on his parents’ TV show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. His parents, Sonny Bono and Cher, are also entertainers. When she was outed as a lesbian by the tabloid press in 1990, Bono publicly came out as a lesbian in a cover story for a leading American gay monthly magazine, The Advocate, in 1995 while still identifying as a woman. Bono was born in Los Angeles, California to Cher and Sonny Bono of the pop duo Sonny & Cher, stars of a TV variety show on which Bono frequently starred as a child. Sonny called his son Bono after the Cher film Chastity, in which Cher played a bisexual woman.
The social and physical shift from Bono’s former female identity to his new masculine one occurred about the middle of 2008. According to his publicist, Chaz Bono’s identity was established in June of 2009. His transformation began a year prior, as detailed in a two-part Entertainment Tonight piece from June 2009. He went through the process of changing his name and gender through the courts in May of 2010. Becoming Chaz, a documentary on Bono’s time in South Africa, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and can currently be seen on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
He joined the 13th season of the American version of Dancing with the Stars in September 2011, dancing with professional ballroom dancer Lacey Schwimmer. On October 25th, 2011 the couple was booted off the show. It was the first time a transgender guy had a big role in a network TV show for reasons unrelated to his gender identity.
