Wayne Robert LaPierre, Jr. was born on November 8, 1949 in Schenectady, New York. The local General Electric factory employed his father as an accountant for many years. The family of LaPierre can trace their patrilineal history back to a French ancestor who left the Brittany region of France in the 17th century in order to settle in New France (now Quebec, Canada).
Since 1991, he has held the positions of Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Rifle Association (NRA), which is the most influential gun rights advocacy group and the largest guns safety training/marksmanship organization in the United States. After working as a legislative aide for Vic Thomas, a Democratic delegate from Virginia who advocated for gun rights, LaPierre joined the National Rifle Association in 1977.
