In January of 1994, Harding found herself in the middle of a scandal after her ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, arranged for an assault to be carried out on one of her competitors from the United States, Nancy Kerrigan. After that, both athletes went on to compete in the Winter Olympics in February of 1994, when Kerrigan won the silver medal and Harding ended in eighth place. Harding agreed to a plea deal on March 16, 1994, in which she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to delay prosecution in exchange for reduced charges.
