About Timothy Busfield
By the late 1990s, Busfield had directed multiple episodes of several shows, including Sorkin’s Sports Night and Ed, for which he also served as co–executive producer and guest star. Sorkin’s Sports Night aired on ABC from 1998 to 2000, and Ed aired from 2000 to 2004.
During this time, Busfield also started playing a regular part on The West Wing as Danny Concannon, a Pulitzer Prize–winning White House correspondent who was also a romantic interest for Allison Janney’s character, C.J. Cregg. Throughout the entirety of the show is carried on the network, he would make random appearances on it.
Busfield received his education in acting from East Tennessee State University and was active with the Actors Theater of Louisville, which allowed him to travel regularly over the world, including to Europe and Israel. In 1981, he uprooted his life and traveled to New York City, where he quickly found work with the Circle Repertory Company in a production of Talley and Son by Lanford Wilson. In the same year, he was given a small part in the comic picture Stripes, playing a mortar-carrying soldier. This was his debut in the film industry.
In 1984, Busfield received his first significant film role as Arnold Poindexter, one of the Lambda Lambda Lambda fraternity brothers in the comedy Revenge of the Nerds (1984) and its 1987 sequel. In the same year, he joined the cast of the medical drama Trapper John, M.D. As the son of Pernell Roberts’ Trapper John McIntyre, a role he maintained until the conclusion of the series Before they divorced in 1986, Busfield was married to the actress and director Radha Delamarter. Their marriage ended in divorce. Willy was the couple’s child together. He wed the fashion designer Jennifer Merwin in 1988, and the couple went on to have children together named Daisy and Samuel. In 2007, they initiated the divorce process.
Busfield had kept himself extremely busy throughout his thirties, appearing as the main antagonist in Kevin Costner‘s blockbuster fantasy film Field of Dreams in 1989 and taking over for Tom Hulce in the lead role of A Few Good Men, a smash hit Broadway production written by Aaron Sorkin, with whom he would go on to enjoy fruitful collaborations in the future. Both of these roles were performed in 1990. In addition, he made his directing debut with an episode of the television series thirtysomething in the year 1990. He went on to direct a total of three episodes of the series before it was canceled.
Since the year 2000, Busfield has maintained a presence on both sides of the camera. He directed and served as executive producer for the critically acclaimed CBS drama Without a Trace (2002–2009), while also making guest appearances as the wheelchair-using divorce attorney for Anthony LaPaglia’s character, Jack Malone. In addition to that, he directed episodes for the television shows Las Vegas (which aired on NBC from 2003 to 2008), Damages (which aired on FX from 2007 to 2012), and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
In January 2013, a spokesman for Busfield stated that the actor had become engaged to the actress Melissa Gilbert over the course of the holiday season. On April 24, 2013, they exchanged vows in front of close family and friends in a ceremony held at San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California.
Between the years 2013 and 2018, Busfield and Gilbert called Howell, Michigan, home. However, they relocated to New York City before the end of 2018. During the 2016–2017 school year, Busfield worked at Michigan State University as part of the university’s artist in residence program.
The 2019 edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival was the venue for the world debut of Busfield’s film Guest Artist. Jeff Daniels not only stars in the movie but also wrote it. The filming of Guest Artist took place on location in New York City as well as in Chelsea, Michigan, which is Daniels’ hometown. Grand River Productions, a new production company founded by Daniels, Busfield, and Melissa Gilbert, will make its debut with the release of this film.
In the year 2020, Busfield participated as a special guest on the episode of The George Lucas Talk Show devoted to the Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip marathon fundraiser.
