Entered Young

Their father entered Randy and Ricky into a competition at a nearby nightclub called Country City, USA. Randy had to perform alone and won since Ricky got into difficulty with the law and was jailed. Travis was given a position singing at the club by Elizabeth “Lib” Hatcher, the nightclub manager, who showed interest in him.

Once more, legal issues developed, and Hatcher begged the judge to release Travis into her care as she appeared before him. The judge agreed, warning him that “he’d better bring his toothbrush, because he would be going to jail for a very long time.” if he ever saw him again. Hatcher’s marriage suffered due to Randy moving in with them, and in 1982 she separated from him. Randy and Lib relocated to Nashville, where she obtained employment as the manager of the Nashville Palace and hired Randy to work as a cook and singer. Randy made a number of demo cassettes, but every local label rejected them because they were deemed to be “too country.”

The album’s fourth single, “Promises” peaked at No. 17.

Randy Travis chose to take a break from music and explore acting when singers like Garth Brooks and Clint Black were on the scene in the late 1980s and 1990s.
