About Pia Zadora
Pia Zadora, an American actress and singer, began acting as a child in regional theaters, on Broadway, and in the 1964 movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. In 1981, after starring in the critically panned Butterfly, she won a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year and the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress and Worst New Star for the same performance.
In Hoboken, New Jersey, Pia Alfreda Schipani gave birth to Zadora. Her mother, Saturnina Schipani (née Zadorowski), was a Polish-American theatrical wardrobe manager for Broadway musicals, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York City Opera. Her father, Alphonse Schipani, was an Italian-American musician.
Her stage name is a shortened version of her mother’s maiden name. In Midgie Purvis, Zadora co-starred with Tallulah Bankhead as a young actress. In the Broadway version of Fiddler on the Roof, she portrayed Bielke, the youngest sister (1964–66).
Zadora turned to music in the 1980s after her film career failed to garner positive reviews. Zadora is a vocalist who has recorded multiple albums of well-known songs, frequently with the assistance of a symphonic orchestra. In 1984, she received a Grammy nomination.
Zadora has received negative reviews for her acting roles, although she has received more positive reviews for her singing. Zadora scored two top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “When the Rain Begins to Fall” from the movie Voyage of the Rock Aliens in 1984 and her cover of Shirley Ellis’ hit single “The Clapping Song,” which was recorded for the film score of The Lonely Lady in 1983.
Zadora featured on the TV program Celebrity Ghost Stories in 2012 and performed with the Desert Symphony Orchestra at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California.
At the Piero’s Italian Cuisine restaurant in Las Vegas, Zadora has been hosting and performing Pia’s Place since 2013.
Zadora was sent to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada’s intensive care unit in September 2014 with head and leg injuries she received in a golf cart accident.
By December, she had returned to her job.
