Patrick Husbands, a Barbadian jockey who was born on May 22, 1973, is thought to be worth $6 million. Patrick Husbands, who now resides in Brampton, Ontario, was born in Bridgetown, Barbados. His father, Walter, was a jockey and he came from a racing family. Anthony, one of his brothers, was a former rider and outrider at Woodbine, and Simon, another brother, also competes there. Husbands moved to Woodbine in 1994 and won 12 races in his debut season. He followed it up with 50 victories in 1995 and his first stakes victory there in 1998. He kept getting better, and in 1999, he took home the first of his seven Sovereign Awards as the best jockey in Canada. He has at least one victory in each of Woodbine’s main races, and in 2003, riding Wando, he captured the Canadian Triple Crown, consisting of the Queen’s Plate, Prince of Wales, and Breeders’ Stakes. On Sealy Hill, who also placed second with Husbands onboard in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, he also won the Triple Tiara for fillies in 2007.
Personal Achievement:
In 2000, husbands acquired Canadian citizenship. For winning the 2003 Triple Crown, he was honored in his birthplace Barbados, with ‘Patrick Husbands Day’ at the Garrison Savannah racetrack on January 3, 2004 being the highlight. Husbands received the Barbados Service Star (BSS) from the Barbados government as part of the nation’s Independence Day honors. On New Year’s Day 2005, he also competed in the second Barbados Jockey’s Challenge, helping the local team overcome Team England 76-65 over the course of the three races.
2,000 Wins:
On October 4, 2009, husbands riding the 3-year-old horse Grazettes Landing for trainer Mark Casse and owner Eugene Melnyk crossed the 2,000-win threshold in the 10th race at Woodbine. He stated: “It’s an enormous honor. For Mark Casse, I’ve won roughly 600 (races) total. He helped shape who I am now. He deserves all of the praise. Gary Kemplen, my agent, is doing an outstanding job. Reade Baker was one of the first persons to truly give me a chance at Woodbine. He was one of the first well-known people to give me a chance.”

Husbands attributes his success at Woodbine to trainer Roger Attfield, and he currently rides frequently for renowned Canadian trainer Mark Casse.
